Gah, every time I vow to post more often, I fall behind. LIfe's been kicking my ass in a bad way lately, though there have been a few light moments in there, like last Friday when a bunch of us went out to dinner at a fantastic sushi place and had the most amazing meal. Good company, great food, what more could you ask for?

But now I've got a huge book that's looming over me and I really want to just write and vid. Converting my vid files for my Festivid is taking forfuckingever. For a show that didn't last long, there are entirely too many episodes. I had no idea. I used to always post a story on my birthday, and I would really like to finish what would be the third in a Hot Dads sort-of series, but I'm not sure if I'll have enough time to work on it and have it read over.

I've also been really battling the depression that settles on me this month, the whole dealing with my birthday without my sister, and now there's December and my dad's death, and everything feels very lonely. I went to see Gravity last week, and wow, I really found myself wrapped up in Ryan's pain and isolation. The way she remembered the details of her daughter's death. I don't know that I got out of the movie what other people got out of it, because I was really focused on that specific part, but I respected it a lot and I'm so glad I saw it in 3D. It truly was stunning.

I'm going to try to see Thor 2 on Thursday, even though I shouldn't since I'm already behind on this book. But I feel like I'm the last person in America to see it (at least, among people who count Thor and Loki as fandom objects of affection).

I've been watching a lot of TV. I have thoughts on many things, but I wanted to specifically mention because I am really really enjoying it even though it's batshit crazy. I often don't related to shows that are just...almost moronic, but despite some of the most head-desking stupidity, the rest of the writing is so great (the banter! the fish out of water! the badassness of all these characters of color! the adorkableness!) that I find I don't care. I mean, I'm actually PISSED that there's only 13 episodes. I just do not get this -- why is it always 13 instead of 15 or 16? I mean, would it have killed them to let us have a little more to tide ourselves over with until next fucking year? WTF? Because I'm going to be heartbroken when season 1 ends, I can tell you that.

It's just hilarious to me that the Hessians are the bad guys and Quaker women are running around in lovely gowns and the Masons are the keepers of the light and Ichabod can speak "middle English" to someone from the Lost Colony of Roanoke and just OMG it's all so hilar. But Ichabod and Abbie and Jennie and everyone are just all so charming and perfect together that I can't get enough. I don't know that I've laughed so hard at a drama ever as I did when Ichabod was talking to Yolanda and thanking her for unlocking the car from afar. So yeah, they can keep doing their insane shit and I'll keep watching because I love it.

But as for , that I'm a little more on the fence about. I like the look of the show a lot, and I like the chemistry between Michael Ealy and Karl Urban. And honestly, I'm such a ridiculous Karl fangirl that I would watch it regardless, but...the fact that they're obviously starting up a UST romance between him and the young woman detective who looks like she's about 21 (I don't know who Minka Kelly is, so don't lecture me about how she's really 35 if you do) and a guy who's in his 40s is just...gah. Why, show, why? I mean, even if you're trying to make him late 30s, it's still...couldn't you have done this with someone older, if you had to do it at all (my preference would have been, you know, not). I did appreciate that his girlfriend who may or may not be bad was closer to his age, and that she was a POC. More of that, please!

I've seen some folks saying that there are no other people of color on the detective squad, so this is where I have to point out that Michael Irby is Latino. (And wow, apparently Sunday night was The Unit homecoming week or something, because first there was Whiny BitchfaceKim Brown on Walking Dead, and then Michael Irby shows up on Almost Human, and I was all "Carlito!!" So it's nice to see other people from The Unit getting work.) It's sad that he plays a douchebro kinda guy, though. But yeah, I have to agree with the comments about how all the synthetics seem to be white, and male, and I'm not sure I get that. I think one of them was supposed to be possibly Asian, but it's hard to tell for sure, and there don't seem to be any female synthetics. This...really bothers me, a LOT. Because we immediately got the sexbots episode, which I guess is the only place we can have female synthetics because what, that's all female synethetics would be good for? Fuck that. There were two male sexbots in the...store? I don't know what to call it, but still, let's not kid ourselves -- this would be what the first use of synthetics would be, sure, I absolutely believe that, but did we have to have the human women imperiled for this to be the topic, did it have to be so brutally misogynistic and also racist underneath it all?

This is JJ's crew, so, yeah, what else can we expect, but I was hopeful because Wyman is at least not as much of a douchebag as the misogynistic assholes like Damon Lindeloff who make up JJ's standard crew. It's just something I don't get -- how Abrams's shows keep giving us these great strong female central characters like Sydney Bristow and Olivia Dunham (not to mention Gugu Mbatha-Raw's character whose name I've forgotten from the short-lived Undercovers, a leading woman AND a person of color, gasp!) but fail so hard at the rest of the stuff and then everything always spirals down. This time it seems like they're spiraling down from the get-go with the sexbots and the terrorized women and that whole storyline that made me so angry I almost missed the cute banter like "you scanned my balls?".

So I don't quite know what to make of the show. I know I'll keep watching because Karl, and also I like Lili Taylor and Michael Ealy, but I am not sure I won't be grinding my teeth down a lot.

I guess this is the hard part of finding yourself in a movie fandom like Pacific Rim, especially where your pairing is the smallest one out there. I keep checking for new fic, but there has been nothing for Team Hot Dads that isn't also an AU, has multiple other pairings, or is a crossover with something else. I'd hoped there might be more after the DVD came out, but so far, no, and I haven't really seen a lot of vids, either. This is where movie fandom sucks -- when you only have one film to work with, and you aren't in the dominant pairing, and you don't have any friends to squee with. I never could have foreseen that PR would make me so crazed, but it has, but man does it feel lonely.

((HUGS)) It's been an interesting fandom to be in, for sure.

Have you any interest in seeing the Peru art exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum? My husband and I are thinking of going this Saturday; if you're up for company, I'd love to have you along. :-)

*nods* some of the tags on the newer tics make me twitch; they're essays rather than tags or they're desperate pleas for readership (though I'm waiting for the one that says "I wrote this in math class, IDEK", which I read in a header on a HL story ages ago.) I'm more of a character dynamics person; and I just want people to be happy and with each other. :-)

As for the invite - you're welcome. If you want to get together sometime, let me know. I work downtown near the Market but live north of the city so it's sometimes easier for me to plan meetings around workdays.

Also, re: pinkeye, ugh. I hope you get to feeling better soon!

Thanks for basically writing down my misgivings about Almost Human. I didn't hate it wholesale, but I did find it so disappointing.

Sleepy Hollow is only 13 episodes? I did not know this! Awww.

Almost Human rubs me the wrong way. It's got that brick-stupid mix of skeeviness - helpless women, not enough actual female characters, extremely high ratio of hookers to non-hookers, dodgy race elements, centrality of men, etc, etc, - tightly bound to anvilly sentimentality and heavy handed moralizing. Meh.

First, big {{{{hugs!}}}}

Second, wait, wait—Minka Kelly is on Almost Human??? Isn't that too much pretty for one show? Holy crap, fandom, how did you not tell me this?

Obviously, I haven't watched it yet, but OMG! Minka Kelly/Karl Urban?? THIS PLEASES ME. Oh, please, oh please let there be OT3 potential.

I don't know -- you might really really enjoy it because of the actors, or you might be frustrated with it. It's hard to tell. I'd say don't get your hopes up TOO high, because then you might be pleasantly surprised. ;-) But it will probably help if you like that actress -- since I have no connection to her, all I get is "forced love interest UST potential" which is never something I enjoy much. Fortunately, Karl and Michael are v. v. pretty and the show itself looks pretty cool, considering it's yet another filmed in Vancouver one.

"Like" is the wrong word for how I feel about Minka Kelly, I'll be honest. She did a really good job on Friday Night Lights, but my interest in her is, ah, extremely shallow, shall we say.
