"Who are Tessa Thompson’s LADY LIBERATORS?" "The Marvel Cinematic Universe has realigned how Hollywood thinks of blockbusters, franchises, and comic book movies. Though the films have been groundbreaking at the box office, it’s been nine years since Marvel Studios began the MCU and they’re still two years away from having a solo female led movie on our screens.

But if Thor: Ragnarok’s Tessa Thompson has anything to do with it, that’s not going to stand. During a recent press conference for Taika Waititi’s much anticipated Thor film, Thompson regaled us with a rad story about confronting Kevin Feige with the possibility of an all-female Marvel movie."

"We Don't Do That Here". "I have a handful of “magic” phrases that have made my professional career easier. Things like “you are not your code” and my preferred way to say no: “that doesn’t work for me.” These are tools in my interpersonal skills toolbox. I find myself uttering phrases like, “right or effective, choose one” at least once a week. This week I realized I had another magic phrase, “we don’t do that here.”"

Black Panther trailer

There is SO MUCH to be excited about in the new Black Panther trailer, but I have to tell you, by the end of it all I could think about was this interview with Michael B. Jordan from back in 2011:
AVC: Vince and Wallace and Alex [are] at heart good guys who just happen to come from difficult backgrounds. You never really play the badass. Is that something you’d like to do?

MJ: Playing a bad guy? Playing a bad guy would be fun, I’m not going to lie. I’d definitely do that in a heartbeat, because it’s so out of my nature.

I am THRILLED that he finally gets to do this.

I am also thrilled about basically everything else in the trailer, which looks amazing.

This was my weekend (in no particular order):
  1. fed chickens in a hailstorm
  2. discovered my tv has died1
  3. failed to make the necessary decisions to buy a new tv
  4. saw ducklings, kaka, toutouwhai (native robin) and tuatara at the Karori Sanctuary
  5. started listening to the first Rivers of London audiobook
  6. started reading an excellent Les Mis fic
  7. had my first language exchange (in person, for 2hr20)
  8. only watched 1 hour of Kdrama
1 I have sound but no picture; it's only 4 yrs old; I am cranky about the mayfly lifespan of electronic goods these days.

ION, [profile] jamethiel_bane is doing a "post every day" meme, and I thought I'd do my own version, using her prompts, but maybe adapting some to suit me, and probably being far more erratic.

1. What do you prefer to be called by folks reading the entry? Who named you that and why? Where did it come from?

My fandom name is china shop, AKA china AKA Ms Shop. Even offline, in fannish circles I go by china.

It originates from an Ani DiFranco lyric (from the song "You Had Time"), via my pre-fandom blog, which was titled "you are a china shop, I am a bull". In 2007 I wrote on LJ:
Pre-fandom I was a different person online, and while I'm no less me now, well, livejournal is a slightly uncomfortable stage (in the performance sense) for me. The "push" of my entries appearing in your friends' list, as opposed to the "pull" of someone seeking them out. If I'm collected together, I'm more likely to cohere, but in general I suspect I'm a couple of tiles in a mosaic.

I first chose this name as a disclaimer -- you are a china shop, i am a bull -- and then accidentally claimed the fragile part as my identity. Possibly prescient.

The first paragraph of which seems adorably quaint now, in the face of tumblr and reblogging and posts running wild.

Anyway, yes, I am china. I named myself. I like it.

Pirates! Corsaires! Buccaneers!

One day I am finally going to write a Generation Kill Age of Sail / Pirates & Corsaires historical AU, and not a small one like the Liberty and Power I wrote for [personal profile] pjvilar.

And when I do, the following things are going to be in it:

1. Gráinne Ní Mháille of Ireland (Elizabethan era), revered lord of land and sea and pirate queen celebrated in the Padraigh Pearse lyrics version of Óró Sé do Bheatha Bhaile.

2. Lalla Aicha bint Ali ibn Rashid al-Alami (Reconquista era), female Muslim cleric, merchant, pirate queen, prefect of Tétouan and queen of Morocco. Known as Sayyida al Hurra, she controlled all of Western Mediterranean while the Barbarossa brothers controlled the eastern. (Here is an interesting article, The Origins of Amazigh Women’s Power in North Africa.)

3. Jacquotte Delahaye of Saint-Domingue (Golden Age of Piracy), French-Haitian female buccaneer who allegedly faked her own death! and lived as man for years! and led a pirate community of hundreds! and took over an island in the Caribbean and proclaimed it a freebooter republic! Actual Black Sails plot = her life.

4. Ingela Olofsdotter Gathenhielm of Sweden (Great Northern War era), privateer, entrepreneur and shipping queen, running a premium plundering business in the Baltic Sea with her childhood sweetheart (with the blessing of King Charles XII of Sweden, they were legit privateers during the war, i.e. had a legally sanctioned pirate empire).

5. Robert Surcouf of Saint-Malo, Brittany (Napoleonic era), a successful French privateer who famously had the following exchange with a captured British officer:

Officer: "You French fight for money. We English fight for honour."
Surcouf: "Sir, each of us fights for what he lacks the most..."

I don't know how, but I've been burning to use these anecdotes in a story. You are welcome to grab them, the more the merrier!

Gratitudes

Today's been tough, social-media-wise, so I am closing all of the tabs containing non-dw (realname) social media, and cultivating some gratitudes.

1. Kitten falling asleep on my lap at lunchtime, warm and purring and paws splayed in complete relaxation.

2. Takeout Chinese for lunch with [personal profile] sanj on the spur of the moment. With bonus kitten sitting on the chair at the head of the table, and periodically sticking his head up over the edge of the table to see if we would let him eat our chicken. (Which we wouldn't.)

3. The new mini-season of Voltron went live this past weekend! Kiddo and [personal profile] sanj and I watched half of it last night, and it's delightful.

4. Yesterday I roasted some delicata squash (seasoned with salt and pepper and curry powder) and then roasted the seeds (boiled briefly, then seasoned the same way.) It pleases me to have turned something I would ordinarily have thrown away into tasty snack food.

5. Dinner for tonight is already made, so when I get home from work around 5:30 I can mostly relax. There's work I need to do, but if I don't do it tonight, nothing will catch on fire.

How are y'all holding up? Be gentle with yourselves.

while trying to find recommendations for/evaluations of local city council candidates --

The Grape Cozy -- in case the link doesn't work for you, this is a knitted "cozy" or cover for an individual grape. For all your grape protection needs.

[warning: link page has video that may be loud] Brevard County Sheriff's "Wheel of Fugitives" -- a regular broadcast by our county Sheriff, imitating a game show to publicize people with outstanding arrest warrants. The current episode of the Wheel is on the office's Facebook page.

I tried asking my mother what she would do if I disappeared; to think about living here without me. She said she needs no help and doesn't need me at all. And then she asked if I still don't like living in Florida. So -- the Mom is pretty divorced from reality. Without me, the others would have to step in and solve her living situation.

Yesterday, I scheduled my grocery delivery for the 8 am - 10 am slot, since I had plans for the afternoon, and so I set my alarm for 7:30 so I could at least have brushed my teeth and put on pants, but I hit snooze instead of getting up, and then the doorbell rang at 7:45. Needless to say, teeth were not brushed and pants were not acquired - I did pull on a pair of boxer shorts before I answered the door, but I was still half-asleep while the guy handed me my groceries.

I guess being early like that almost makes up for two weeks ago, when they didn't show up at all? Even though they said they delivered it to someone in the household? And I spent half an hour on the phone with Amazon assuring them that as the only person who lives in my household, I had not received any groceries. They refunded my money, of course, but it meant I had to actually go do grocery shopping. And then my baby spring greens froze (I think it was the packaging? because the bagged salad doesn't do that) and I had to buy lunch all week anyway, because ugh, salad that has frozen and then defrosted is all limp and slimy and I couldn't bear a week of lunches of it.

In better news, my plans yesterday were meeting up with [personal profile] tenaciousmetoo, her husband, and [personal profile] innie_darling to go see the 30th anniversary screening of The Princess Bride, which was, of course, fantastic. It opened with Ben Mankiewicz interviewing Rob Reiner, and Rob Reiner telling cute stories about the filming of the movie (and then there was a second brief interview segment bookending the movie).

The movie still holds up. It's still sweet and funny and romantic and funny, eminently quotable with iconic performances, sword fights, pirates, evil princes, and true love conquering all. Do I wish Buttercup were a little more active in the fire swamp? I do. But I am heartened by having seen Robin Wright as General Antiope in Wonder Woman, and the progression of yet another princess from my youth (I was 17 when TPB came out, so I can't say childhood) becoming a general. Anyway! It was great to see it on the big screen again, and I definitely recommend it.

Then we had dinner at the Grey Dog - the food was good but the music was loud - and talked for a couple of hours. All in all, a great way to spend a grey October afternoon.

And then the Giants actually won last night! A game where they were supposed to be annihilated! So that was fun. *g* But now I am very sleepy and wish I was home in bed instead of at my desk at work. Sigh.
