I'm trying to set my vids up so I can post them after they premiere at VVC, and I just had my Premieres vid, to Titanium for Peggy Carter, "blocked in all countries" and I can't test it out in public spaces to see if it's really completely blocked because I have to keep it private. I spent hours working on credits and a custom thumbnail for it and this vid was a major, major hassle to make what with my computer dying and getting the files, and now I can't even use it. I have been meaning to try to get a Critical Commons vids site, but there's no real control over the thumbnails and that's a hell of a lot of time wasted. And people really aren't going to even see it there, because all the traffic for fanvids is on YT these days. I hate them, but I feel like I'm just stuck there if I want anything to be seen.

The thing is, there are other vids to that song on YouTube, so this is just…arg. I learned a long time ago that filing a dispute does nothing, because whatever box you check, they say "that doesn't give you the right to use copyrighted work." Usually when I get a warning, I just do the "acknowledge third party content," but there's no option to do that here, it's just totally blocked.

I'm not actually sure what to even do here. This is so discouraging and frustrating. I don't have the spoons to deal with this, I really don't. (Add to this the fact that some people have been kind of snotty about Wasp Nest, and I just…why do I do this?)

Sorry, I shouldn't have been so sarcastic, I meant to also say that once, if, I find a way to stream it, reblogs and links will be very helpful because it won't get passing traffic on YT. The saddest thing is, I think it turned out really well and I'm really happy with it and I think it could have been enjoyed by people.

If I can't embed the video, it won't get views. The video has to come from somewhere to be put into here/tumblr/AO3. Almost no one downloads the vids from my site. And I'm having trouble just finding out how to get the damn CC account, let alone get one where I can embed a video.

Oh I see. that sucks! i'm so sorry. And I hear you on the embed, though I always d'load, so I didn't even think of that...

So weird. I had problems with Titanium on YouTube for a while but I kept trying periodically and eventually it uploaded and it's there now.

Can you post it publicly with a download link? Not ideal, but at least it will be seen?

Yeah, and even though I'm trying Vimeo, they've been banhammering everyone too and if it's banned on YT, it'll probably be banned there. And I was really pleased with it! Of course.

You know, it's weird, I actually have your vid on a list of vid links (still love it!), and I went to see today if you had had trouble too. (I also meant to tell you earlier that I was doing Titanium for a vid at the con, even though I know most people don't care these days about someone using the same song, I just remember people being annoyed by that sometimes from back in the day. And I had a really strange experience with someone recently about a song they'd used too, and it made me a little nervous! So yeah, hello, it'll be in premieres!)

If you don't mind me asking, what did you do--just keep re-uploading, or challenging the ban warning?

Glad you like it! And yes, of course you didn't have to tell me you were using the song, etc, etc - the norms have changed since those days, I think permission's only required for an obscure song that you only found because of someone else's vid.

Anyhoo, I just kept reuploading - but over a period of months. Because YT makes new deals with music publishers all the time, so I figured eventually they'd make a deal with the Titanium owner. But it's weird it would be unblocked for me and not for you.

Ugh. Getting a CC account is a bit complicated (you have to sign up for a basic account, then email them and say "I'm a fan vidder!" and they will upgrade you immediately) and should be easier imo, but it doesn't have the problem of YT and Vimeo.

I've tried to link promo links (tumblr post, AO3 page) in my vid announcement posts from the get-go, but the whole thing is frustrating and there doesn't seem to be any good single solution.

Well, *I* get to see it on the disk but...yeah. That really sucks!!! I very much hope you get it up somewhere. I hate the randomness of YT!

Can you put it in a Dropbox account (or other cloud service) just to see if it will play for other people? Vimeo used to be an option for people too, IIRC.

Oh no! :( :( :( The video sounds wonderful - I'm so sorry you're having trouble getting Youtube to cooperate properly. (And I hate the way vidding has shifted over almost entirely to streaming vids; I really don't like watching them streaming, and always download them so I can keep them and watch the high-quality versions, but fewer and fewer people are even offering that anymore ...)

You can embed from critical commons - nobody will go there to see it, but there'll see it at AO3.

I opened up an account but won't have time to learn the interface. And I mean, if things aren't on YT, for me, they don't get seen (not that they're seen much there, but at least sometimes they do)--almost no one watches my vids on AO3, I don't even know why I go to the trouble to post them there, honestly, there doesn't seem to be much of a point. I'm trying to see if/when Vimeo will banhammer me in the meantime. I leave tomorrow so I just don't have a lot of time for all of it.

Maybe just use Tumblr streaming for now and get in touch with AO3 people for help filing a dispute? I just tried doing a dispute and it looks like there is an option for "My use of the content meets the legal requirements for fair use or fair dealing under applicable copyright laws." which goes through fine so it'd be worth trying at least as things change a lot on Youtube.

Definitely talk to the AO3 legal committee; they can give you some pointers.
