Basically, I think I want a dog that's a cat. Just a cat that will go on car trips and go to parks and take long walks.

Have you considered a retired racing greyhound? These are definitely the cats of the dog world. (Ours was also, um, well. Not that bright, as in really, really dumb, but that's not typical of the breed.)
