One thing to note - the Escapade vidshow people asked me to convert my vid from 16:9 to 4:3 - as all my source was 16:9, doing the conversion to 4:3 probably caused it to have that look. I was only able to take a quick look at the result as it was up against the deadline, and it appeared fine - but fine on a little screen is vastly different from fine on a big screen.
