I know, right? I see everywhere this thing where people put a comma unnecessarily in front of names, like "the book by author, JK Rowling" and I mean, it makes me gnash my teeth, but I can see why people who never paid attention in English could see it that way. But this person is an experienced editor, and she has this consistent thing where she lets this construction like "wherever they went, Jane's closest friend, Joe Blow captured everyone's attention" just go and there are quite a few of them, and then there's this other thing she does where she lets constructions like "in confusion, Jane, patted her hair" go. I just can't even.
