One of Steven Brust's lesser books (Cowboy Feng's Space Bar and Grille) has a bit where a character talks about quitting smoking (as he does periodically) as Sherlock's sobriety. "What are you doing?" "I'm sitting here not smoking." As if it's an active but terribly tedious thing.
