in the toilet

God, I never seem to post about anything fannish anymore, do I? I'm sorry I'm so lame. I have all these thoughts about the series finales of both Rome and Life on Mars, and I want to write about them, but compared to most of my thinky f-list, I don't know what I could say that would be original or interesting, even though the endings stirred up such deep emotions for me. God, I love both these series. Rome, especially, was a huge surprise to me -- at first I had a tough time with it, since Roman history has never been especially interesting to me and I know very little of the time period or the players. But I just fell in love with the show, not the least of which was because of the manly Heterosexual Life Partnership of Pullo and Vorenus. Life on Mars, though, was so totally my cuppa right from the first moments. A splash of Pros and the Sweeny coupled with the modern cop shows from Britain I love so much like Second Sight and Prime Suspect and just... it was perfect. And I'm already kind of weepy that neither one of them will be with us again.

I've never been an after-fan -- I want to watch the series as they unfold, when they are current. I need to get in on the ground floor or I don't generally get into something. I don't like watching things in days-long marathons; I'd rather have the anticipation and the squee as it unfolds week to week. And now that will be no more for either of them. Sob.

Anyways, I have been stressed out about other things, as well -- today I signed the contracts for the insanely expensive house addition and kitchen remodel, to start probably in July. Even buying the house didn't feel like such a big deal because I bought it from Dad; this is so much more... businesslike and costly and just HUGE. I'm totally scared and overhwelmed and I will never have any money again but I will have a spiffing kitchen and utilities that are in the house instead of the dirt under the house and so much room for my friends to hang out in the kitchen and be comfy instead of cramped and uncomfy. And lighting. I will actually have good lighting and counter space, so who knows, I might even start cooking for food instead of as a way to test my smoke-alarm battery.

But before the addition comes the new toilet! I have waited over ten years for the horrible crappy toilet with the tank lid that didn't fit to malfunction so I could get a new one, and the snazzy stylin' new one came yesterday and OMG I love eet! It has the quietest flush and even though it's low-flow, it's not like the crummy low-flow ones of even a few years ago that never seem to even work; and if you need extra water, you just hold the handle up for a little longer and it doubles the flush capacity. The footprint isn't the same so I have to grout some of the ungrouted hex tiles that were under the old one, but that's not too big of a deal. And best of all, it has a soft close lid that closes itself with just a light flick of your hand. It's also what they call a comfort-height -- they comply with ADA height regulations so that people with disabilities can use them, and people like me, tall with creaky old knees, don't have to bend so much. I didn't even know things came this way till I got hooked on HGTV -- I have learned so much from that channel! (Tankless water heaters I had also never heard of till I watched "Small Space, Big Style" and thought, damn, that would be perfect for my house.)

It may have cost a fortune to buy and install, but it'll pay back a lot in terms of water costs and I'm such a treehugger that I appreciate eco-friendly things, even if they're initially large investments.

I love the little pillbox tank -- that's also a kind of classical style with a nice modern spin. And check out the lid -- the seat and lid just kind of float down on their own and you hardly have to do a thing.

Space age design with a slight classic twist in the handle -- and the handle pulls up toward you rather than pushing down, which is kinda neat.

Very spiffy! It looks a lot like several of the commodes I saw in the UK last month (and liked muchly).

Yeah, the company that makes it is European, I think, so that automatically makes it more stylish. ;-)

Congrats on the new toilet and the signing! I'm sure I will have many enjoyable trips to it.

Ooo! Very stylish. I like the shape and the handle. Cool.

I know! It's not supposed to be exciting, a new toilet, but it is! New stuff is always fun, I guess, no matter what it is.

That there is a thing of beauty. I love HGTV. Hooked. Possibly more so because I have a house now:-)

I think HGTV is the greatest way to waste time evar. Plus it gives you so many great ideas and information.

Oh, stylish! I like it a lot!

Classic, yet fresh and (and this is the ONLY thing I hate about my toilet) unlike my toilet, it doesn't have that Highly Detailed Dirt and Dust Trap Base.

That was totally the thing that made me fall in love with it, besides the height -- now when the guys miss the spot, it's not going to be such a pain in the ass to clean. There's just this small indentation at the back where the bolt caps go.

Sleek commode! Congrats!

I just cannot stop spending the bucks, but home improvement therapy, I have to say, is underrated as a treatment.

Aren't those ADA-approved toilets the best? We got one about 7 years ago, and it made a huge difference in Pat's life--and I still love it! Honestly, I think it should be the standard in toilets.

Now I'm wondering why I waited all these years for an excuse to get one -- I should have just bought one years ago. Even with the elongated shape, it has a smaller footprint, but it's making a difference for my bad knees.

Yay for getting your shit together a spiffy new toilet!

and the handle pulls up toward you rather than pushing down, which is kinda neat

But you may have to post instructions for visitors :g:

My biggest fear about home improvement stuff is how to choose a contractor and not get ripped off for shoddy work. I just -- I have no idea, and no one to get references from. Argh.

I look forward to hearing about your new kitchen. Did you design it yourself? That must be so much fun!

Uh, it wasn't until I actually posted that that I realized it could be read as a snotty "well, finally" rather than as what I meant it as: a silly joke about it being a new, you know, toilet. You knew what I meant, right? Er, right? ::hopeful, apologetic look::

Hah, no worries -- I totally got what you were saying. And you know the funny thing is, I hate talking about bodily functions, or anything even related to them, but I like this thing so much I'm trying to ignore my neurosis.

Post pics of a new commode and I delurk. How sad it that? But I'm a sucker for a good remodeling story, not to mention objects like your toilet that stylishly combine form and function. I can't wait to hear more about the kitchen remodel.
