Revealing

I wrote only one story this year, but hope to try for some NY's resolutions if I can get inspired. My story was for the fandom Life.

The Moon Cannot Be Stolen (4190 words) by gwyneth rhys
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Life
Rating: Not Rated
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Charlie Crews/Ted Earley
Characters: Ted Earley, Charlie Crews
Summary:

When Charlie found Ted.

At first it was a struggle to figure out what to write, since the request was for Ted and Charlie and I spent days wracking my brain trying to come up with something that wasn't just a rehash of the show or set in prison, but in the episode with the coyote, Ted mentions to the documentarians that he was in a really bad place when Charlie found him, and that was the perfect impetus. I kind of knew going in that setting it before the series, and not having Dani in it, would limit readership, but wow it was soul-crushing to realize just how much that limited it. But I'm really, really happy with the story, and the people who did comment seemed to think I really nailed their voices, and my recipient liked it, so that's all very good indeed.

Every year, I wonder this same thing: Why does everyone insist on making recs posts only before the reveals, and act like it's some kind of deadline? I don't get this. Why does knowing the name of the author make it...unreccable? I have so many more stories to read yet, and hope to do more recs posts, but it's weird to me that people act like they can only rec anonymously.

I think the recs-before-reveals thing was born from the idea that anonymous stories would be recced only on their own merits, not because they had a popular writer's name attached to them or had been written by a friend of the reccer's. Of course there are a lot of other factors that go into recs, and someone could totally game the system if they wanted to!

P.S. Hi, just stopping by to say that I enjoyed being your writer this year. :)

I certainly plan on making more recs post-reveal. I still have a ton of fic left to read!

I understand the appeal of anonymous recs, I certainly get a great joy every year from going into my recs sets and seeing which authors I already know and love I managed to rec anonymously. But that's far from the only reason I rec stuff, and I certainly don't consider it reason to STOP reccing once reveal has happened.

I don't intend to only rec pre-reveal, but most of my recs come out early because that's when I'm excited about Yuletide and trying to read a lot. Then I go back to work and all my plans to keep reading Yuletide and keep reccing go to hell. But I'm going to try to be better this year! I've marked-for-later a bunch of stories already and I haven't even looked through some of the bigger fandoms.
