weekend wrapup
Nov. 17th, 2003 10:29 amI spent Saturday with a group of Buffy fans in and around the northwest, watching eps and talking about all kinds of stuff. The lovely
tiashome offered her hospitality and let us trash her house, and I got to meet
claudia_yvr,
nwhepcat,
mlyn, and
varina8. It was so cool having a chance to watch Buffy and Angel eps with a group again, and everyone is really interesting, all with such different takes on the shows and the characters, that it was a most enjoyable day. Plus, there was cake. Everything is good with cake.
And then I tried to rush through my three Netflix rentals because I'm so far behind on my list: The Matrix Reloaded, Sharpe's Honour, and The Deep End. Matrix sucked -- jesus god what a boring, stupid movie. I wasn't insane over the first Matrix, but I liked it enough to want to see more, but this was just... zzzzz. So full of pompous nonsense, too. Everything looked as cool as it did before, but there was just nothing human there to relate to except for Link. And the incredible Monica Belucci (prrrooowwwrrr) was entirely wasted; at least I'm prepared for Revolutions, though. Sharpe's Honour was definitely one of the lesser of the series, for me, even though it did introduce the marquesa, and I like her chemistry with Sharpe. But I wished there'd been a bit more time spent on his grieving for Theresa. And The Deep End was very cool, one of the most visually stunning independent movies I've seen, and Tilda Swinton is, as always, incredible. The thing I'm enjoying about Netflix is the ability to catch up on all the things I've missed over the past few years, but it's bad in that I have so little time to watch movies at home, that I end up keeping them for forever.
And then I tried to cram in making edits for this Miami Vice slash story, and damn if it isn't just the worst thing I've ever written in fanfic. I keep wondering if there are any more slash cliches I could throw in -- I think the only ones I've left out were ones I hate, such as the insert tab A into slot B sex scenes that could be any two guys, and the yelling of orgasms, and that the sex was better than any sex either of them had ever had with icky women. I think most of the cliches that freak me out are all related to sex scenes, which is why I retreat to frou-frou poetic language and metaphors and similes, all as a way to escape the usual scissoring of fingers and boneless sprawling and whatnot. Plus, I'm just out of the whole slashy loop at this point -- writing slash in a western fandom, you don't have to get too graphic, and by necessity certain things weren't likely to happen, so you can write around all that with greater ease than with a modern slash relationship. Or something.
And lastly, my goodness, was I surprised at the responses to the first... what to call it? Myths and misconceptions about writing? Usage myths and tips? I have no idea. Maybe I'll take a page from Buffy and call it usage mythtakes and tips... or not. But that was the first time I've ever had that many responses! Heck, even the men with eyeliner post didn't generate that much response. Admittedly a lot of the responses were part of other conversations, but hey! Still more comments than I'm used to getting. Whee. So I guess I'll try to make it a regular Friday thing. Maybe this week, I'll tackle the poor benighted comma, and all the misunderstandings around that.

Date: 2003-11-17 11:28 am (UTC)I am soooooo with you on this. When I saw it downtown, we was sent into the wrong theater by mistake and it took 15 minutes for us to figure out the usher's error. They gave us free passes to see it again, but we just couldn't care enough to even try. I think we went to Seabiscuit instead.
On the writing myths and misconceptions, I can't wait for your next post. I'm a product of AP style and I found the possessive post extremely useful.

I only enjoyed the original Matrix. And the second one, well, I got to see Keanu naked, that was about it for me :P Even though i thought the car chase scene was great and the chocolate cake, despite the fact that it was completely out of place, was, erm, interesting.
And I also adored "The Deep End". Just such a beautifully told story.
