I had a strange dream last night that involved that JC guy from 'N Sync (or however you spell it). I know nothing about him except what [livejournal.com profile] merryish has told me, but still, there he was. It was some kind of variety show set, or something, and he was wearing this very Michael Jackson/Prince type costume, with the shoulder pads and epaulalets and stupid stuff like that, and had horrid hair -- a kind of mohawk, with shaved sides, but long from the top and top of sides, all curly and cascading down his back. ::shudder:: The guy is pretty -- I gave a gorgeous head shot of him from Entertainment Weekly to a friend, and I remember thinking, whoa... but he was not so much in this dream. It didn't help having these weird Solid Gold Dancer types doing very '80s gyrations in the background. Too weird for me. I'm glad I don't usually remember my dreams, if they're all like this.

Last week I was driving home from work, and part of my trip takes me by a wetlands area that has pathways and a slough that you can raft through, I think. All these cars were stopped near a crosswalk (there are two lanes in each direction, separated by a large median of grasses and trees and shrubs), but not at the crosswalk, and I was muttering darkly until I saw a mama duck and her two little babies waddling past the giant tank-like SUV in front of me. All the cars had stopped for the ducks! It was so cute. There's a lot of roadkill around there (raccoons, possums, birds), which breaks my heart, and so it was wonderful to see that everyone had stopped for mama and her two babies!

X has a beautiful new picture up at her site that helps take the sting out of missing Angel. Click on Far From Heaven. Sigh.

I'm having trouble coming up with what I should do next for a usage post. Not that there are no topics, there are tons, but... I can't figure what to tackle next. Any thoughts -- anyone want to see something specific? I think [livejournal.com profile] movies_michelle put in a request a while ago for how to use modifiers and that's a fairly important usage thing, so does that sound good, or do you have something else you're burning to see turned into a long, boring, didactic screed?

I wasted way too much time this weekend making mix discs for my sister. Evil Twin has terrible taste in music and requested some stuff she could play as background at something like a barbecue or get together. I asked her what she wanted when I couldn't remember the topic, and she said, "you know, top 40 or Motown or something." She thinks liking the Supremes makes her hip; I wouldn't even ask her about someone as popular as the Four Tops because she'd go, "who?" Girl is a cultural vacuum. So I dumped in tons of stuff to iTunes and created a few playlists, and gave her some different themes. Even though the electronica-tinged one is incredibly mild, she'll still probably go "I don't like this." But I told her that anyone who knows anything will hear the discs and say, "wow, your sister has excellent taste in music." I even made her a disc of somewhat popular stuff recently (ranging from Kryptonite to Clocks) and called it "Stuff you might have heard, and if you haven't, you should." And that sunk my weekend; I cannot believe how much time I can spend obsessing about mix discs.

Except for a brief visit from one of my oldest friends. I only got to spend a few hours with him, but he loves vids, so I showed him the stuff I've been doing recently and some things from Vividcon. He's a total fanboy outside of organized fandom, and says things like "I heard Firefly was really good," and then I smack him upside the head and tell him he has to *watch* these damn things! Men.

Modifiers! (Okay, so you obviously already knew my vote.)

And that picture from X was gorgeous. Okay, so pretty much everything she does is, but I loved this one.

Don't know if it's worth a whole post or anything, and you actually already probably covered it in your post on quotation marks, but I have to confess it's driving me insane that my sister keeps insisting on putting things in quotes that she thinks are "slang" and thus need quotes. One example was in a recent email newsletter she sent out where she said, "[I] would appreciate hearing from you, as I am 'downsizing' every aspect of my
life, and can help you to 'downsize,' too." Why oh why do people think they have to put perfectly ordinary words into quotes like that? Sigh. Like I said, you probably covered it in your post on quotes, but I don't feel like looking that up now, and I wanted to vent, so you got stuck with my venting ;-).

I don't even know the name of it. The subjunctive maybe? "If I were King of the Road" vice "If I was King of the Road." Why? Why? Why?

Ah, such good questions. Hell, I don't even know the answers... so, then, might make for a good topic becuase I'll have to research it more and try to get a handle on how to explain it.

Yeah, I did talk about that in the quotations post -- it makes me nuts. What really kills me is when people put quotations around names. Their own names. I mean... what the hell?! love, "Mom." Yes, you're the so-called mom, and that's not your real name, so it must need quote marks to set it off from real words!
