Little bits of video joy
Jan. 10th, 2008 01:10 pmToday is More Joy Day! I didn't have anything to offer, as I haven't got much time for writing, and I'm working desperately to get my Escapade vid done, and then there's the job hunting stuffs. But I thought, since I have to spend so much time on YouTube for work occasionally, I would dig up some of my favorite clips from random things, stuff that never fails to make me smile. I hope you can take a few minutes to watch them, and see if they don't make you smile, too. And thank you so much for starting such a wonderful idea,
sdwolfpup -- you are the embodiment of joy for those of us who are lucky enough to know you.

The Sacred Heart Hospital’s air band performs my favorite Boston song. (Unfortunately this one’s cut a bit in the middle, but it has the best video quality.)

The first time we see Brendan Fraser and John C. McGinley together in their perfect heterosexual life partners way. This has the gay chicken scene right after, but I’d suggest watching that from the link below, because if you go too far on this link, it may lose a little of its joy, and it contains some big spoilers. So, basically stop, right after the nail in the hand. (And if you’re squeamish, stop right after the hug!) This was the only link I could find for this particular scene in English, I’m afraid.

I can’t find a clip for Phoebe’s gay ice skater husband, played by Steve Zahn!
Andy Barker, P.I.
I adored this short-lived series on NBC last year (bastards). It was such a funny, deadpan sendup of private eye series, where Andy Richter plays this naïve, sweet accountant who inherits the office of a retired private dick. And gets mixed up in all his old and new cases, which are really absurd. There are only a few clips on YouTube for it, sadly. I wish the one where he’s involved in a car chase with the bad guys tailing him was up — at one point, he exclaims, “I can’t lose this guy!” and his friend yells, “It’s because you keep signaling!”
Nobody puts babies in a corner, where Andy’s quest to get his child’s favorite toy back gets him involved with a whole 'nother set of troubles.

Typical Andy.

Now and Again
One of my favorite series ever, and one I fear will never be released on DVD because it was cancelled by CBS over a pissing match they had with Paramount, not because of ratings (it was a hit), this has gorgeous Eric Close and Dennis Haysbert both at the peak of their gorgeousness, and before Haysbert became even more famous on 24 and The Unit. These are long sections of clips from the episodes, but it gives you a great idea of the chemistry the actors had, the quality of writing and acting, the just… everything wonderfulness about it. Close plays a man who was initially played by John Goodman, who is killed in an accident, but his brain lives on in the body of a bioengineered superman, created by Haysbert’s Dr. Theodore Morris. They have a very rocky relationship, because Michael “Newman” is still very much full of the memories and longings of Michael Wiseman, and Dr. Morris most emphatically does not want that.
Plus, there is frequently singing by Haysbert.
Origins
This is where John Goodman becomes Eric Close. And again, a great example of how unusual this story is. You’ll want to go to skip, after the little bit with Dr. Morris showing what a Faustian, whimsical, and somewhat cruel guy he us, to about 3:57, just because some of the stuff after the credits are not of the Joy.

Over Easy
Morris tries to convince Michael that he needs to take up the invincible mantle. The stuff at the beginning with Michael’s wife and friend won’t make much sense, so go to 1:27 and start there.

The Wire
Like
sdwolfpup mentioned in her Wire pimping post, people often forget about the humor in the series. A lot of it comes from Bunk Moreland, who is always wry and wise and pretty frequently drunk.
This is one of my favorite conversations between Bunk and Jimmy McNulty, which SDW linked in her pimping post. If you didn’t watch it then, watch it now.

Bunk is really, really drunk, and for once, Jimmy isn’t.

One of my favorite characters, Omar, has this very plainspoken, laconic wit that I adore. This is a long clip, but it shows that very well, and how people assume he’s stupid because of what he does — much to their own detriment. Here he’s testifying against one of the people he’s robbed, and whom he hates, because of his association with killing Omar’s lover. (The thing with the tie is related to McNulty having been asked by the DA to get Omar a tie for court, and the two of them go shopping, which is also hilarious.)
