Date: 2020-01-15 03:48 am (UTC)This almost feels like a bottle episode and it's interesting to see the ways that it moves beyond that, and is especially interesting to contrast with that other episode where you're watching a lot of that siege against Raylan thing where he tried to put the money back Winona stole. And everything's better with Stephen Tobolowski. I love the way the one cop thinks Raylan's schtick is the coolest thing he's ever heard--let's face it, he's right, and he should say it.
Art's "We have his ballistics on file from the...they're on file" maybe one of the best Art lines ever. It makes so much sense when he says that Raylan is going to give him a stroke, just because of all the ballistics they have on file at the very least. Oh Art, I LUV U.
Loose Ends:
I always love how close scenes with Walton Goggins makes Tim's accent deeper--like being around Goggins's native Carolina twang gives him something to develop with the accent and make himself sound twangier.
Raylan standing and telling Limehouse that talking about his mother would upset him is so very stone cold killer. Like, most of the time, Raylan puts on this affable face to his ultra competence, but that's just chilling, and I like how Limehouse immediately breaks out the booze to try to smooth things over.
Interesting that this episode had a woman writer and woman director, very rare for this show.
Both of these episodes are interesting watching Quarles unravel even further. He thinks he's in control but Raylan and Boyd are so far ahead of him, eat guys like him for breakfast and he's never met anyone like them, so he doesn't know what to do and is dangerously overconfident. Not to mention Quarles rubs everyone the wrong way because of his privileged smugness, while people who know Raylan are willing to alert him to stuff or help him exit the building or what have you. You catch more flies with honey...
Watching the Detectives
Date: 2020-01-15 07:13 am (UTC)Raylan in a henley, sipping whiskey is definitely high on my list of sexy things. (eta: ugh autocorrect always wants to change Raylan's name)
Poor Gary. Always used as a pawn. More so dead than alive.
"If you already knew that, why you been messing with me?"
Deep breath..."It was fun."
I submit the above as evidence of flirting. Thank you. God, I just adore Tim. I really really do. The look he gives Raylan when he's trying to establish a timeline and Raylan is (understandably) preoccupied with what's going on in the other room. "You want to go ahead and put your ear up to that glass, you be my guest."
1) I think Winona is right to be hurt and upset that Raylan didn't tell her how Gary knew about the hitmen and lied to her face but then 2) knowing Raylan like she's supposed to how she can then imply she's not certain he didn't kill Gary really rubs me the wrong way.
Wynn and Quarles do a pretty good job here, tightening the net around Raylan, from both the PD and the FBI, though he's both lucky and clever enough to squeeze out of it. And then they're also setting up Boyd. They're very busy this episode!
Re the FBI - that scene with Tobolowski, Art, and Raylan is great. Starting with Art saying "Raylan may be a lot of things but I've never gotten even a whiff of dirty," to the FBI dude then insulting Art, to Raylan THEN defending Art by shifting the focus back onto him, and the look they share between them, to the FBI accusing Raylan of being in cahoots with Boyd, to then the best part which is Raylan's reaction of barely controlled amusement followed closely by WTF. He's like "this is a joke! haha! oh shit no you guys are for reals." Perfection.
"You can either assist...or resist...in this inquiry." Tobolowski!
I feel like Vasquez is enjoying himself a little too much here lol.
The elevator ride! Tim saying, "Why don't you try telling me the truth." <3 Raylan trusting Tim with the truth! And Tim then letting Raylan think he doesn't believe him, but then revealing that he does. The best part is Tim's poker face and then that appreciative almost smile that Raylan gives him. That's some good flirting.
Loose Ends
Date: 2020-01-15 08:00 am (UTC)Raylan, flat out lying to Art! Dude. lol. I think Art knows Raylan is lying to him.
"Social awkwardness is often the curse of genius." LOL. Watching Raylan talk circles around Napier is fun.
Boyd is in his element, interrupting that debate between Napier and Shelby. Look at him work that crowd. He's so good! Really he could have had so many different careers.
I have very mixed feelings about Eva and Ellen May. Mostly negative, to be honest, though I can recognize she's honestly trying to help Ellen May here.
Lots of things shifting around in this episode -- this is a somewhat complicated game of chess going on here. Or some kind of strategy game, where you have to stay several steps ahead of your opponent.

Date: 2020-01-16 01:23 am (UTC)I feel so bad for Gary, which, since he was in bed with criminals and got his friend disabled and tried to kill Winona and Raylan, is saying a lot. He was just such a hapless sad sack. And Quarles is so unnecessarily evil, like, he sure as shit didn't have to do that.

Date: 2020-01-16 02:40 am (UTC)3.08 - Watching all the different levels of law enforcement, and all the different reactions to Raylan is really a lot of fun. The local cop getting a kick out of just how cool Raylan is, the FBI salivating over the idea of taking him down, the Marshals vs the FBI and Vasquez just enjoying the show (and, hey, if he gets Raylan on top of it - bonus) was about 20 different takes on cop show tropes packed into one episode and it was hugely entertaining.
Quarels and Wynn trying to set Raylan up...I always got the feeling that Wynn knew it wouldn't work, but was willing to go along with it coz a) then he wouldn't get killed, b) it made him look like a team player to the boss a c) if it did work he would be happy to take it. I mean, Wynn has not survived this long without being able to read the room.
Just. Ugh. Winona.
3.09 - Ellen Mae has both the worst luck and the best luck of anyone on this show.
Raylan and Boyd plotting is one of my favorite things ever. When it's just them they seem to slip sideways into a slightly different reality than everyone else. I would happily watch an episode that was just Raylan and Boyd using more and more elaborate language to avoid actually talking about the subject of their conversation.
Anything involving Limehouse is just so fraught with tension even though he doesn't actually do all that much. Is he really backing Quarels? Is he setting Quarels up? Both? Limehouse plays all the sides. And his standoff with Raylan at the end of the episode was a really fantastic moment.
