Welp, my computer is basically fucked (at least it's still on warranty). They have to replace the video card, but they may not be able to save the data on the hard drive either, much of which hasn’t been backed up. A lot’s on dropbox, but a lot isn’t, including all the saved email recently (I know, I know, but the thing is, I don’t understand how to create a backup system for all this stuff that's ginormous like the vids, and it gives me anxiety attacks, so I keep avoiding it. Learn from my mistakes, kids!) and the downloads folder where I've let some things stay I should have moved a while ago. I don’t know what I’m going to do about Vividcon vids. The day only got worse from there, including tearing my hands to pieces trying to open a Pepsi bottle on the way home from the Apple store--if I'm having a bad day and going to be stuck in traffic, I want to drink my fucking pop, you know? Thank god for SebStan’s selfie today, it was the one shining light.

Tell me something good?

The old house closed today, and we now have just one house.

Small children love the Cap backpack.

My dogs have gone two days without having an "Oops, we ate something awful." incident.

oh honey! you really have had the awfullest day - I'm so sorry, and am definitely thinking of you (and hoping more is salvageable than you initially fear)

I know this isn't your jam, and thus won't cheer you directly, but the Hawks won Game 1 in the SCF, so there are lots of happy hockey fangirls tonight.

Oh no, that's horrible. I'm so sorry. Your vids are beautiful and this must be just beyond frustrating.

Nice thing: I rec'd Dark Approach to a friend of mine who put it on their Kindle! (I did, too.) Other nice thing: I got my medz today after going like a day and a half without, whoo.

I have acquired a coffee maker which actually works and agrees with how I function. I have a kiten who loves me dearly and I got paid today.

Not a bunch of super exciting things but it's quite nice for me nonetheless.

Ugh, it's such a stomach-dropping feeling, losing data. I'm sorry - I hope they're able to recover it for you. Sometimes they can! *crosses fingers*

And then you got attacked by Pepsi, it's so unfair!

I don't know if you're looking for recs for a backup solution, but if you are and you're staying within the Mac ecosystem, the thing that has worked really well for me is Time Machine + Time Capsule. (You can run Time Machine with any networked hard drive you want, but a Time Capsule is the one Apple makes and though it's probably more expensive than the alternatives -- I think they're $300 -- you get the "Shit Just Works When You Plug It In" Apple Experience.) And then you just turn Time Machine on in the menu bar and it will back everything up over WiFi and then keep backing up incremental changes, and you literally do not have to touch it or worry about it ever again. If you ever do anything that involves you needing to reinstall your entire hard drive's worth of data from scratch (ask me how I know), you just get your blank, fresh-OS-installed computer online on your network, it will find the Time Capsule, and then it will redownload your entire hard drive for you. It is so easy.) We got ours after I had a catastrophic data loss incident that basically ruined a bunch of things I kind of needed for grad school at the time, and it was expensive but oh my God it is good not to worry about not having backups. (Now I just worry that the Time Capsule will break.)

If you're not looking for recs, feel free to ignore me.

Good things that have happened to me: I finally figured out how to get an text editor app for my phone (Notesy) that links up to Dropbox, so I can work on my fic while on the bus tomorrow. Yay!

Oh noes! *Fingers crossed* that they'll at least get your data off of it in a timely fashion.

Our recent good news is my son got off the waitlist and into day camp next week, which makes our life much simpler.

Portable Hard Drives

with about 1000GB cost less than a hundred dollars now. My Passport for Mac is the best investment ever, I got it on Ebay for about 70.00. You just plug it in your computer and move folders over into it for backup. Best back up ever.

Easy peasy and I am a techno Luddite.

I bought a 2 TB My Passport Seagate external drive on Amazon for $80, plugged it in to the USB port, turned on Time Machine and walked away. I literally do nothing else with it except plug it in and ignore it. I'm thankful to Apple for making backups easy because otherwise, I'd never do it. (I'm in trouble if my PC laptop dies.)

Hope all works out okay with your machine and your vids. I know how frustrating such things are. :/

Yeah, see, that would barely make a dent in the video files I work with. It might work for the iMac, which is what broke, but that's part of why I've never done a backup system for everything--the video files are on multiple hard drives and I don't understand how to handle the whole thing. So I never did, because I end up having panic attacks at my inability to deal.

Well, I have two multi-terrabyte external drives. But the thing is, that's where the video stuff resides, and I don't know how to make backups of all the different hard drives, plus I couldn't cope with time machine having rewritten one of my other hard drives when I first booted up the new iMac, and so I just...didn't do anything. I get panic attacks because I can't figure this shit out on my own. So, obviously I have to find a solution after this. It's just also that I've never had an ounce of trouble with my macs. Never. It's something I've meant to take care of, but...after my external hard drive with all the MC remasters died, I was looking at too much money in data recovery to handle, and that and backing up just kind of sit there on my to-do list. I fucked myself, but this computer has been the rare problem one I've ever had. (There's a whole memory thing that I won't go into)

Augh I'm sorry you will (might?) lose some of your data. I HATE that. It's such a feeling of frustration.

GOOD THINGS, let's see. We're fostering our second dog this weekend? He's a corgi mix. Here's his picture:

Well, crap. I hope they can recover the hard drive.

I'm a bit surprised Apple doesn't have some kind of automatic back up function you can turn on, honestly. That seems rather careless of their OS designers...

They do. It's just me that didn't. A long time ago when I brought my new iMac home, it rewrote my ext. hard drive with time machine backup and I freaked and took it off. I backed up manually but that drive died a few years ago, and I never dealt with figuring out a replacement. Because I've never had a mac fail. Ever. But this iMac's been a problem, and I should have realized something else could go wrong.

Ah, gotcha. I am very familiar with the "it messed up once, kill it with fire" feelings about computer programs.
