I think there are waaayyy too many people out there relying on friends or people who promote themselves as competent to edit fanfic (because that it what a beta should be doing, not being a gushing fan), and those betas know absolutely nothing about mechanics or structure. And it's always been like that, just easier now that the 'net makes it all so quick and simple. Sigh. We're doomed.
