We have a climate that's fairly similar to England's -- in fact, every time I'm over there, I know exactly how to dress and what clothes to bring because the weather will be the same as it is here. So we're lucky in that a lot of things will bloom in winter until the first serious frost (like calendula flowers, or wallflowers, and last year I even had cannas and begonias growing till the frost turned them to mush), and there are a number of winter blooming plants that thrive in the cold. Temperate climates are great, except it makes it hard to do garden cleanup in the late fall, and then it gets too cold and wet, and by early spring, everything's growing again! You can never dig up your plants. ;-)
