Sons of bitches must pay
Jul. 13th, 2004 08:23 pmAfter over a year of waiting, after anguishing and rallying and caring and working, La Femme Nikita fans get the biggest blow of all: the second season DVDs that were coming out on Tuesday are not being released. I thought I could not hate Warner Home Video more than I did, but I now know I can. There's no official information about why, but one can only assume some kind of license or other wasn't taken care of or was pulled at the last minute.
I feel like crying. It's been such a hard road for this show -- for two years after it ended, they refused to consider the discs, telling us that we were obligated to buy the crappy Columbia House videotapes or they wouldn't make DVDs. Then finally last year we got S1, and right afterwards were told that there wouldn't be a S2 release because the sales at Best Buy hadn't been what WHV wanted (when BB frequently didn't even promote them or make them available, and sales were higher at places like Amazon). After a change in management and action by fans, though, at the end of the year last year, we got word that they finally would release S2. Over a year after the first release, which was almost the kiss of death. They still have never released them in anything but R1, even though LFN's fan base is huge in Europe and Australia.
And now it's one week until they're due, reviewers already have copies, and the ads are in all the magazines, and... they're pulled without further information. WHV has no particular interest in championing these, so if it can't be resolved, they could easily shelve the whole effort, never to be finished.
I love this show so much -- every bit as much as I loved and adored the Jossverse shows. It's my perfect vidding fandom. But now... arg. So much for my attempt to sit down and write tonight. All I can think of is how badly I want to find the execs at Warner and kill them slowly and painfully.

reviewers already have copies
Maybe you could get you hands on one of these. Some are bound to turn up soon on EBay.

Date: 2004-07-14 01:42 am (UTC)::nods:: I was about to say that. If reviewers have copies, they will turn up on Ebay and people will be burning them. I don't like the whole illegal sale thing, but when the networks and distributors refuse to come to the party with legal copies, they only have themselves to blame.
Still, it totally sucks. ::hugs::

Date: 2004-07-14 12:50 pm (UTC)Ah, but thing about DVDs is, there is a potentially unlimited source where people are prepared to do dodgy and illegal things like burn. I can't guarantee anything, but my suggestion is that if you see the DVDs on Ebay, enter a bid that you consider reasonable and that you can afford to pay. Do not worry that you will surely lose the auction. There is the possibility that the seller uses less than principled selling techniques and sells not only to the highest bidder, but to everyone else as well. Possibility mind, but it's worth a try...
I'm sorry about the financial difficulties. I know it's been a shocking year for you!
