I'm sorry to hear that other people's reactions have left you feeling like you shouldn't make comments -- but I know the feeling entirely too well. I was really heartened recently when I took a chance and emailed someone out of the blue and she took both the crit and the applause equally well, and it almost made me feel like maybe that kind of thing isn't hopelessly lost.
