I've been avoiding doing a Vividcon discussion because I can't quite figure out where to begin. I never can, so I more often than not end up not saying anything at all, which is a shame. This is the first year I neither did a panel nor VJed a show, and it was kind of freeing in some ways to not have to think about that beforehand, but I think I also sort of... paid less attention to things around me, which wasn't so good. Although, to be honest, a lot of the con passed me by this year because I was so sick. People have memories of whole conversations we had that I can't remember anything about. And I realize in looking at the program that, damn, I missed an awful lot of shows. So I plan to just talk about the vids I had something to say about, whether positive or less than, and go by show. All the links for the vids mentioned can be found on the VVC LJ.

In Can't Live With 'Em, Can't Trade 'Em for Food
One of my favorite vids in the whole con came in this show, Code Monkey by Mouse and Snarkitty. I know -- it's a Stargate:Atlantis vid, and what is wrong with this picture? None of my friends can believe that three of my faves where SGA and House vids. But this one... it does something right that I've been waiting for for a long time in SGA vids -- making me see why the hell people like this show and in particular, Rodney. I have come to despise that character and his actor's mannerisms, and believe me, I'm just as shocked as anyone else to say that this vid totally humanizes Rodney and makes him seem lovable and misunderstood in a way the series never has done, nor any vids, for me. I have always wanted to see the vid that could make me say, hey, I can see the attraction, and I just love what they did here. Maybe because it's a Rodney and someone else besides Sheppard vid? I don't know. But the "big warm fuzzy secret heart" lines just get me every time, and the way they've got him kind of exasperated, superior, and annoyed on the "Code Monkey like you" lines just... makes ME have a big warm fuzzy secret heart. And that the evil boss Rob is that stick Elizabeth just makes my evil-glee heart happy, too. There are a lot of places where I wished that the clips were shorter to avoid so much talky face, but the fact that this is their first vid speaks volumes about where they will go as vidders, I think, as they get more sophisticated. What an incredible first effort, and what a joy of a vid.

In Nearly New
Probably my favorite vid of the whole con was Vibrate by chasa, for Dexter. I was a little stunned by the abreaction a lot of people had for the Dexter vids, and I know part of it is that I am not squeamish, so oceans of blood and stunt body parts don't really bother me. But out of all of them, I think this was the most accomplished and well-rounded, maybe due to the nature of the changing relationship within the vid that mirrors the changing relationship of the series. Creepy wailing Rufus Wainwright is a perfect complement to that show, as well, and I think the vid is an outstanding example, just like Code Monkey, of how incredibly powerful song choice can be. Not that I mean in any way to downplay the vidder's skill, but I think the fact that good vidders can discern a perfect song for a vid and make everything come into play together flawlessly is a huge part of... what makes them good vidders! This vid just blew me away in every respect, and I need to get a DL of it since it wasn't a premiere, as it's one I want to play again and again. The atmospheric shots breaking up the people and faces clips were so perfectly chosen.

Not an Addict by Gianduja Kiss. This is a huge favorite song of mine and when I saw it listed there, I thought, oh, what a great idea! And I think it could have been, but wasn't quite there. I think if it had moved away after the initial establishment of Janelle (Janette? I honestly can't remember her name, as I didn't watch the show) and her conflict with the "addiction" to being more about the interior struggle with good and bad, with Nick and Nigel Bennett's character, it would have felt more solid and less repetitive. I liked the concept a lot, but wish it hadn't just stayed on the vampire part and maybe rounded the story out a bit more.

Ballingal Hotel by Gabby. I really liked this vid, the song choice is especially powerful, though it feels like it lost steam at the 2/3 mark (which is something I often find in my own vids, so it's not a pointed or personal criticism). I've seen this movie and I think the vid captures, through this song, the odd complexity of it.

Living Dead Girl by bradcpu. OK, a long time ago, after I discovered Nicky, aka obsessive24's, vids, I kept seeing her mention bradcpu. But did I go watch his vids, knowing that if someone I stalkedadmired so much liked them, they would probably be good? No, I did not. Why? Because I'm stupid, apparently. This vid blew. me. away. One of the best Buffyverse vids I've seen in ages, and when you consider how many of those I watch, that's saying a lot. And who knew Rob Zombie could be such a perfect pairing with Faith? This is such a strong, gut-punch, hard vid, expertly made, and just impossible to take your eyes off of.

Bring Him Home by Killalla. I finally get a Horatio and Pellew vid, and it's... to show tunes. Which I loathe in vids. This didn't work for me on any level, and i was sad. But I understand the vidder has been working in a kind of vacuum, and so I will keep hoping that the VVC experience might bring her to make another of this type, but without show tunes.

Jesus for the Jugular by obsessive24, for Carnavale. A lot has been said about this vid and the use of the Holocaust historical footage, and I'm not sure I'm the one to say more about it. I'm not very intellectual or smart, and I can't talk in academic speak about these sorts of things. Honestly, if anyone ever asked me for an intellectual discourse on my own vids, i couldn't give it to them. So that's why I don't think i'm in the same league with the people who have been debating this vid. The one thing I can talk about, however, is both my heartfelt response to it and to the history of using additional footage in vids (I ran a panel on this last year, so it's still on my mind even now). I'm not certain whether people feel the Holocaust is off limits for a media songvid because it is kind of the pinnacle of evil in the 20th century, or because they feel news and documentary footage of anything bad doesn't belong in what is considered entertainment. I know that this question has been faced before, especially by DeeJay years ago when she made Too Long a Soldier, using news footage of a number of conflicts around the world that the character of Bodie in The Professionals would have been engaged in, particularly Northern Ireland and Africa. Morgan Dawn and Justine Bennet used some news footage of riots in a Starsky & Hutch vid that also took some flak.

It's hard for me to believe that still, at this point, people have trouble reconciling outside source in fannish vids, but it still does crop up -- primarily, however, with heavy topics. Sisabet's use of polar bears in documentaries was widely praised within her Due South vid, and so I wonder if some of the troubled reaction to Jesus for the Jugular was that it gets back to a horrible, deeply wounding and tragic subject matter interwoven with something that is, at its heart, entertainment (though often hard to watch, too). I'm not smart enough to answer the questions it raises or discuss the whys and wherefores, but I do think that had the news footage not been about the Holocaust and the leadup to the atomic bomb, it may not have caused such a painful reaction. If it had been something that mapped more closely to the visuals of the series -- possibly Dust Bowl or Depression destitution? -- would people be reacting the same way?

I honestly don't know, but it's a question I find myself asking. I loved the vid -- and I can't really tell you why. Maybe because I am familiar with the series and so know where they were leading before it was cancelled, and it hit exactly the right sickeningly weird and terrible notes, all those images, both series and documentary, just pounding and pounding at you with the lead singer's screeching voice. In some ways, Carnavale was an assault on the viewer at times, its dark and terrifying look at the conflict of good and evil leaving you sort of feeling beat up once in a while. Anyway... If I was smarter, I could probably figure out how to break this down and talk about it, but all I can say is, whoa.

In Premieres
Truthfully, I don't have a lot to say about most of the Premieres vids. Some just went right by me without making much of an impact, and some I just didn't care for. The first half felt a little weaker for me, but that could be just because I was waiting for our vid, even though I wasn't as nervous as usual this time. I liked the idea of Seven Nation Army for the miniseries "It" more than the vid itself, maybe just because it felt so long, though I don't know why. It just didn't work overall in the end. And I liked Rodeohead as much as everyone else, but it doesn't leave me wanting to make much analysis. Just have fun. Signal to Noise was a very solid and interesting BSG vid, and one of a handful of really strong entries for the series this con, with a perfect song choice. Cathain was gorgeous and so incredibly well edited that it took my breath away and left me feeling like "I'm not worthy" even though I'd already seen it once before that evening... I never tire of watching it. I adored Bankshot, like everyone else (as Sandy said, "Crime is fun!"), and it was so delightful to see a series I love and that is way underfanned get some attention.

Two standouts here for me were Want, for SPN, and West of Her Spine, for Dexter. I don't even know if i want to get into the Dexter one, other than that it's by my vidder crush sweetestdrain, and made with her usual excellent eye and timing -- I fear that it has a whole other life of its own, the way Jesus for the Jugular did, and I'm not maybe the one to get into it. But I think people's visceral reactions to it have clouded their judgment and I wish it was more talked about for being a good vid than for people freaking out. Want I really liked because it's the first SPN vid that actually made me feel the slightest interest in the series, and maybe because the focus was off of the "oh the pretty boys boffing each other" thing and on to something that felt more dynamic and good old fashioned horrory to me. Even without knowing the demons, I felt drawn in by this one. I loved that there was a Miracles vid and the song choice, Spiriti, was stupendous, but the sped-up motion didn't always work for me. I almost wish it was punctuation rather than carried throughout, but I understood what DeeJay was doing, and when it gets to the clock at the end, it's very powerful.

In the second half, what stood out for me was first The Loyal by SDWolfpup, for the movie Children of Men. I really really liked this one a lot and it pissed me off when someone said it was better than the actual movie, because the movie is going to, IMO, go down as one of the decade's greatest films. And SDW really, again, picked an astonishing song for this that worked as dramatic backdrop so seamlessly, it made me cry. The ending shots of hope... gah. Sniff. Another great BSG vid here, Falling From the Sky by jarrow, and this said as someone who's getting really sick of Starbuck (yeah, I know, but hey, I'm still planning to make a vid about her, even though i'm sick of her!). I loved The Wind That Shakes the Barley even though I've had to listen to Jo talk for months about how much it sucks and how she wouldn't even give me a disc with the vid so that I could put in on our vids collection and blah blah. Ha ha, Jo! Your vid was great anyway! It did have some tech problems from other tech problems, but even with that, it's still gut-punch strong. Margie y Seah's Tamacun totally captured the lighthearted whimsey and snark of the Dresden Files.

I loved Cold As it Gets, for Friday Night Lights, even though I know nothing about the show beyond football in a dying Texas town, but this was haunting and beautiful. Here's Luck's Firefly vid, Nothing New, just... oh, my show! Why, why, why... this vid is such a tantalizing capture of Mal and Inara's troubled relationship and it just makes me so hungry for all the things that never got explored. I almost like it as much when vids raise questions for me as when they answer questions. Cosmia... this is a beautiful vid that completely knocked me out with its grace and deft editing, and yet, I don't think I will ever want to watch it again because Joanna Newsome out-Bjorks Bjork and I simply can't handle that kind of female voice. I loved how The Trouble With Poets by Anoel refreshed the Highlander vid genre by using tired old clips with a fresh new attitude, and it's deftly edited, and well... just very sweet. It made me weirdly nostalgic for a show I was never into! Dreams Are My Home almost -- almost -- made me understand Gwen on Torchwood, a character who I loved at first but who crossed such a serious line for me I can never enjoy her again. But Melina did such a strong job that I could almost understand her. And Woodstock was haunting and sad and beautiful (the pinprick of blood on the hazard-suited guy's finger for the "we are stardust" line gave me goosebumps). I felt like the vid should have ended with the note in the water and the last couple clips didn't give the ending the powerhouse shot I wanted, but it's otherwise gorgeous and wonderful.

I don't intend to ignore Women's Work and Another Sunday, but I had a little bit more to say about them. I never was able to join in the discussion about Women's Work that people were heatedly engaged in because for me, simply, it didn't work as a vid (also, I had laryngitis). I had absolutely no idea what was going on in the vid until toward the end, when the flaming woman on the ceiling came in, and then I realized it was SPN and that these women had to be interrelated in some fashion. It had just seemed like some random images of women at that point, both mistreated and not, at the time to me (I never really look carefully at the program book and it doesn't stick in my mind what vids go with what). I didn't know they were being victimized, or whatever, and so as both an argument and as a media vid, it just didn't hold together for me, despite the powerful use of one of my favorite Hole songs. Anyway, call me an idiot if you like, but I was baffled by the response because until someone explained to me what was happening, I couldn't parse what it was saying. And Another Sunday, the hilarious Stargate Atlantis vid, just... wow. What a perfect con vid. It took everything I love about so many of my favorite cheesy '70s and '80s TV credits and made them into a vid! Rodney's heroic pause and look up! The wraith wailing on the "ooo-oo-ooh"! Ronon sparkling! M'lyn was sitting next to me, and she looked over at me, figuring I'd be rolling my eyes and annoyed by this crazy SGA vid, and instead I had my hands over my mouth, trying not to squawk with laughter and cough to death. OMG, how I love this vid. I tell you whut, if SGA was like this in reality, I would totally watch it.

And now I think I better post this, and do Challenge and Auction later, because I do want to talk about some of those vids at length and this is getting long and my RSI is acting up.

Since I didn't get my DVDs until a few days ago and have been too lazy to track down all the reports that have already been made, this is the first one where i actually knew all the vids (and that sure makes a difference :) And you're right that there are some vids that get all the meta, and it's really nice to see you discuss some of the others :)

And you point out a really important issue, namely that we need to remember where *we* are coming from and general context issues when talking about vids...your response to Women's Work reminds me a bit of mine to Jesus...I think if I knew the show I might have responded quite differently.

(Though, I do find your comments about outside footage and the Pro and SH vids you mention really interesting...I wonder if the VVC library has them?)

Also...I've already sent Charlie Jade off to three different people..you srsly singlehandely have started a fandom here :D

I'm planning to watch my VVC dvds with friends on Thursday, so haven't seen any of these yet, but just wanted to thank you for this delicious in-depth commentary, which makes me so psyched to watch vids and vids and vids!

Also, I love that "Code Monkey" vid. I loved it before I'd ever seen SGA, back when I was in my "@#$% wish everyone would shut up about that show" phase -- something in it just tickled me. So I'm glad it did you, too. :-)

Thank you for the long and extremely detailed thoughts, both in reference to my vid and all the others that you mentioned. I'm all-thinked-out now, too, so there's not much to add from me.

Although when I was reading I realised something that I didn't before, and that's - I think a lot more pro videos are using stock historical/newsreel footage now. Don't know if it's a recent development or whether it's been happening a while and I've only noticed it recently, but off the top of my head I'm thinking Pink's "Hey Mr President" (I think that's the title?) and Linkin Park's video for their lead-off single for the new album. Don't know if two is enough to indicate any sort of trend, but to me that could possibly support the theory that mainstream media - not just fan media - is also moving toward more integration between fictional/stylised and "real/old" footage.

Oh - And I think Deejay's pros vid is in the middle of being remastered by Justacat - or is on the verge of being remastered.

I do think we probably have similar disconnects about Women's Work and Jesus for the Jugular based on our familiarity. It's probably impossible not to bring our experiences, or lack thereof, with the stories to the fore. I'm usually pretty good at parsing the basic theme of a vid, but I was completely flummoxed by WW, because I didn't even realize those images at first all came from the same show. If someone had no idea about either Carnivale or Night and Fog, they might not be able to even grasp that those things aren't already connected. It's very interesting to see people's reactions and the discussions -- I think because honestly, it's just nice to see discussions *and disagreements* about these vids, dissections and differing opinions, without people getting all hopped up and pissy. I very much have enjoyed reading the different opinions, even when i don't share them.

I have to correct one thing, though -- Jackie mentioned Justacat doing DeeJay's vid, but I dn't think Too Long a Soldier is on that list, unless that's changed since I last spoke to her. The big problem is getting the right news footage. I'm not sure how they'll be able to go about that. But neither the S&H nor Pros vid are online, I believe, unless possibly Morgan has put the S&H one up on her vids site.

Code Monkey makes me so happy, and I just want to play it over and over. I should probably just embed it in a page so I don't show up as having watched it 500 times on Imeem. ;-)

I feel like I can't even begin to do it justice, even just describing how I feel about it. So far, every Carnivale vid I've seen has been a knockout, but this one put me down for the count. And I haven't even gotten around yet to doing the Challenge show, and talking about your House vid, which just... holy crap.

I dunno if I should admit this, but I just Googled for references to Vibrate and found your post :) This is what you do when you're bored at work on a Friday. Anyway, those are lovely comments you made about the vid -- that it would be anyone's favorite amongst so many great VVC vids is really something special. I bumped my Premieres vid to keep Vibrate in the Nearly New show (because the Premieres show was full and it would have gone to NN overflow), and I'm glad it was enjoyed.
