sherrold passed this great link on to me from the Boston Globe, about the Fast and Furious franchise and how it is moving Hollywood movies toward a better representation of race. While he doesn't exactly love the movies for their content, it's one of the few articles I've seen from the mainstream that doesn't just trash them as, well, trash.

Oh, Dom and Brian, you're not just my BSOs and OTP, you're cultural touchstones, too. God bless you.

Yeah, I've always laughed when people wonder why these movies have such an appeal and do incredibly well internationally. Such reviews are almost always written by clueless white men.

BSO stands for beloved sex object (I think some newer fans have filled in the words themselves and created different meanings, but that's what it meant back in the olden dayes when it was first coined).

I haven't seen it yet either, but really appreciated this review - thanks so much for sharing it! I loved a lot of what he had to say, he's right on with the thinky stuff, and lines like "It would be like a grown-up “Sesame Street,” except for the deadly road races, and the fact that the puppets have tattoos, guns, muscles, bald heads, and a ton of moving violations." are not only funny as hell, but spot on target

I also like this point the the audiences are diverse, but most of the movies they're watching are not. I'd make the same point about Hollywood rules for how the women get treated, too. Ignoring a significant market demographic always baffles me.
