Bad news everywhere

Arg. I see bad news all over my flist, hear about it from people I know... I wish I could hug the world.

My oldest, dearest friend, who has stuck with me when most people have given up on friendship with me over time (I appear to have a tolerance expiration date), was in a terrible car accident last week. He is very diabetic, uses an insulin pump, and his right leg was so badly damaged they are doing reconstructive surgery on him next week -- but because of the diabetes, they won't work on his messed up ankle that's in pieces. They don't have a high enough success rate with that surgery to warrant the danger of doing anything with a diabetic's foot.

We were talking on the phone the other night and as it always does, it drifted onto TV and movies. He is very much in love with Battlestar Galactica, and feels really deeply connected to it, so I don't have the heart to tell him how much of a disappointment it is to me these days. But then we talked about Watchmen and he told me he hadn't ever read the comics. I felt that must be remedied so I bought a copy of the book collection and sent it to him. Because nothing says recovery reading like a bleak, Nihilistic, blood-spattered apocalypse peopled with morally ambiguous, ill-tempered vigilante superheroes!

If you have some room in your prayers or thoughts, please say a good word for Keith. I'm not sure what I'd do without him.

I'm so sorry about Keith's accident. So many diabetics lead very tough lives; most of us have no idea. I hope everything goes as well for him as is humanly possible.

My existence is looking pretty good at the moment (it's hard to be blue in the presence of copulating tiny birds!) so it is easy for me to offer disinterested positive thoughts in the direction of your friend, Keith. I hope that he recovers in time for you to catch Watchmen together in the first-run theatres. -em.

I'm so sorry. I will be thinking of him and sending him best wishes and hopes for easy recovery. And Watchmen is an excellent present; you're right, such a lack must be remedied! And if he likes BSG, I mean, your description of Watchmen applies almost completely to BSG too, right? Except for the word "superheroes."

Wow, that sucks out loud! It's very scary, too because I was diagnosed with diabetes a little over a year ago though luckinly I'm very stable and under control. Still. Scary. And it has to be incredibly painful.
