I am going nuts trying to understand this thing happening to my vid in Final Cut Pro 6 and I don't get it. My clips for the vid say they are DV/DVCPRO NTSC, 720x480, 29.97fps. Which is normal. I put them in the timeline, and they started showing up when I viewed them in the Canvas, as smaller and centered in the window with black on both sides and top and bottom. I cannot for the life of me get the Canvas window to the 96% size that it used to be, so the closest I can come to viewing it in the right size is 100%, but that makes a scrollbar appear and I have to center the material in the window to see it properly.

Now, I could live with that if, when I exported, it didn't do the same thing pretty much, and squeeze it on top of that. I have it set to export into QT as DV/DVCPRO NTSC, because I've futzed around with other settings and nothing is working.

I can't seem to get this to export the right way, and I'm closing in on deadline, and it's hard to work on the vid without knowing it's not going to do this funky weird crap. I still don't know exactly why FCP changed my Canvas window settings at one point, but it's been like this for a while, it's just never been like this because it's showing me some kind of problem that is still there on export. Of course the manuals offer no help at all

At this point, I'm not sure what to do. I've got half the vid finished so I don't want to scrap the project, but if I can't export it right, it's doomed anyway. Arg. ARG. Anyone have ideas?

I'm running FCE4 so it's basically the same program.

First off it would be best to resize your work windows to allow the Canvas to stay at 100%. Gives a truer view of the clips. But if you need it to fit your current Canvas use the button at the top of the Canvas window and select "Fit to Window". You might have accidentally jostled the windows and changed the size ever so slightly.

Select the fcp file in the Browser window and select "Item Properties" from the Edit menu. Check to see if your project specs are the same as your clip specs. If the specs "are" different then the possible solution would be to create a new project in the correct aspect then copy and paste your old clips into the new one.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, none of these were things that worked. Fit to window on my screen is really small, not to mention that it's showing me the black on the sides. I couldn't get rid of the problem, so I had to start a whole new file and reimport the clips and the song and start all over from scratch. God, I hate that, especially when the frickin' thing was over half finished. And Friday's the deadline. Gar.
