I actually dusted off my unused twitter account (because I haaaaate twitter with the white hot fury of a thousand burning suns) to reblog this tear-bringing PSA from Leslie Odom Jr that I saw on kass 's journal.

Like all of you, I'm a giant ball of stress, and am just trying to focus on writing and not watching anything on TV or online outside of safe places like DW. But writing is a bit hard right now, for obvious reasons, but also, someone left a really shitty comment about my WIP that I had made the interesting choice to make Shuri an evil bitch, and it really threw me for a loop. I don't usually get really shitty comments, just mildly shitty stuff couched within praise so there's not a lot to say about it, or just plain weird comments. I don't really have enough commenters in general to have to deal with waves of people being awful. But when I have had terrible ones, they were for one and done stories, not WIPs, which lends it a whole other awfulness. minim_calibre, who is beta reading for me, insists Shuri's not evil (I mean, this person ranted about hating T'Challa too because he was mean to Bucky, so massive eye-roll there), but it's just...never pleasant when you're struggling with things and trying to be creative in the face of what feels like insurmountable odds to hear someone say things like that. Obviously, I'm not going to respond, but I can't decide if I should just delete it, since that sometimes sets off a chain of bad shit, or leave it there so it doesn't start drama with a psycho. Why are fans like this?

Yuletide assignment is...interesting. I can say no more, but this might end up being a tough one.

Huh. You made Shuri into quite the evil bitch. Wasn’t expecting that. The fact that she was the reason T’Challa found Bucky and she knew T’Challa was going to kill him, but she didn’t care, to clarify. Also, they knew that Bucky could have been innocent, but they didn’t give a shit about that, either. I’ll always hate T’Challa because of the way he treated Bucky.

UH WOW, you don't owe that person anything, especially since it was a cowardly anon hate drive-by comment. I would just delete it and turn off anonymous comments. What a terrible thing to say! I am so sorry.

I can only surmise that your commentor was reading a different WIP and posted in yours by mistake because those characterizations are not in your story. Like, not even close. Those kinds of people are not fans - they're agitators. Fuck 'em.

I've been getting a lot of batshit/mean/cruel comments the last few months. I get so goddamn angry at them it's not healthy, but at the same time I have to sit here wondering what people are getting out of leaving them, what lack in their lives are causing them to go after me, someone who works hard to provide them with FREE entertainment they feel free to shit on because I'm not a real person to them. What emptiness must be in their lives that they seek to fill it by being cruel during a time when the universe is already being exceptionally, breathtakingly cruel? I don't know. It's not even comforting to think of this, just...it comes to mind.

I have not responded to these comments. But I have started to complain about them on Twitter because I don't owe anyone discretion when they've offered me only cruelty.
