D'aaaawwww, congratulations to the adorable Canadian couple for the gold in ice dancing. Not only was it nice for the poor old North Americans to finally get two medals in ice dancing, but that they went to such a couple of sweet, talented, and nice teams is frosting on the cake. (Though I confess, I did like the routine of White and Davis a shade more, maybe because I just fell in love with them during their original dance competition last night.) And to have it on Canada's home turf was just... Canadians must be fair to bursting with pride.

I thought it was so sweet that they were best friends with Davis and White and trained together. It seems a long way from the men's skating, where Plushenko was pouting and smirking the whole time and playing up his villain status. Here you had people who genuinely seemed to like each other, and everyone was gracious about it.

You could tell the Russians weren't super happy, but at least Domnina only pouted a little, and they were adult enough to give the gold and silver winners hugs. Geez, though, Tanith Belbin and Oksana Domnina's costumes were fugly, and their partners' weren't much better, either. Hideous, hideous. I felt a little sorry for the Italians; I didn't think they were that bad but everyone seemed to have dismissed them from the start. Poor kids.

The original dance program last night was monumentally irritating -- I felt like if I saw one more routine from another country doing some sort of country/cowboy crap, I would break the TV. I don't want to get into the costume controversy, so I guess that was my own program controversy -- stop with the country cowboy western shit.

Anyways. Yay adorable Canadians and Americans!

I thought it was so sweet that they were best friends with Davis and White and trained together.

The footage of the four of them hugging and chatting and laughing and standing around before going out on the ice for the medal ceremony reminded me of high-school kids waiting backstage for their curtain calls during the spring musical. They're all of an age just around nineteen, and on videotape the makeup is so heavy and garish and too much for young faces (and for the same reason), and the costumes are so very clearly made for a particular "character," it really looked like a well-lit backstage after the musical has ended and they're all talking about whether they should go to Dave's house or to The Diner afterward, and how they're *so* not going to first-period chemistry tomorrow.

The best part was when Virtue looked at Moir after their scores were announced and you could see her say "We won the Olympics!"

OH! Join us in the "who the hell does she look like" discussion - Tessa Virtue = ...??? The closest I've come is Anne Hathaway, or possibly a younger Mary-Louise Parker. She looks like SOMEONE, though.

I vote for a brunette Amy Adams! She's gorgeous.

Davis and White skated fantastically well but Virtue & Moir's free skate left me speechless. Their last lift with the spinning, with her arms raised up as if in supplication to the climax of the music, was so freakin' beautiful that I actually teared up a bit. (I still can't believe they skated to Mahler. Wow)

Oh, Amy Adams makes sense too! Or even, oddly, Nicole Kidman.

She's about to become the World's Sweetheart.

That she is. Plus, like my friend [livejournal.com profile] loligo has said, "Tessa Virtue" is like the best romance novel heroine name EVER.

Brunette Amy Adams is good! She also at times reminds me a lot of Ione Skye in Say Anything.

Another team that I really enjoyed last night and wished they could have placed higher was the Scottish kids, the Kerrs. I loved that they played unconventional music (what a welcome relief from the same old same old), and also that she lifted him. That was so awesome!

Zooey Deschanel. This is actually a game I'm really good at. "The poor man's ___" or the love child of ___ and ____. In fact the other night, after having just watched Inglourious Basterds, I asked Jo, "so, Til Schweiger, love child of John Savage and Michael Rooker, or what?" I love figuring these things out -- I miss Spy magazine and their column Separated at Birth for that reason.

They totes were like the kids in the high school musical! I think that made the whole thing even more wonderful than ever -- they were putting on a show!
