x-posted from tumblr:

I wrote a scene in my recent fic Don’t Wait Up for Me where Bucky’s kind of almost half-dancing around the room and Sam asks him to teach him some of his old dance moves. In my head it was Little Red Corvette. 1999. All the Prince songs that are full of such joie de vivre that you can’t help but move to them, all on one of Sam’s favorite playlists.

I cannot really believe that he’s gone. We keep losing all these artists who have made such a difference in our lives, brought us so much joy and insight and beauty.

Why can't we lose Trump, Cruz, or other evil motherfucking vampire of that tribe?

I love that scene. And I love that it's Prince, I bet Sam has a great playlist.

SERIOUSLY. Lou, Bowie, Prince....God they all influenced me so much.

It's so weird. I can't quite get my head around it. I loved Bowie, but Prince was for me what I think Bowie was for people a couple of years older than me. A Prince 45 was the first record I bought for myself. (ETA: Now that I think of it, it was Little Red Corvette.) For years, Under a Cherry Moon was my absolute favorite movie. I went to see Purple Rain with my two best friends when I was 13, and it blew my mind and changed my life. I danced to his songs (and Vanity's, and Morris Day's) at school dances and teen dance clubs all through high school. I still own at least 5 of those 45s. We knew every word.

I would have loved to put together a "Sam's playlist" thing

YES

(You could tell me the titles! Sam would like the classic live version of Anotherloverholeinyohead, maybe? http://www.jukebo.com/prince/music-clip,anotherloverholenyohead,surfq.html )

....Lou, Bowie, and Prince were just all so formative for me growing up. Prince was so genderqueer and controversial, and didn't Tipper Gore basically target him for "Darling Nikki"?

joie de vivre is such the perfect way to describe Prince's music.

When I was (very briefly) at boarding school, a girl on my floor was IN LOVE with Prince and had a big poster version of that Lovesexy nude cover on her wall. They made her take it down! //cool story moi

OMG, seriously. And wasn't there some big 20s aesthetic in Under the Cherry Moon? I want to listen to some of his later stuff now, too -- I thought most of it was Not For Me, but some of what I've seen on UTU has been really interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9R1E4y7_Js

He didn't get to live long enough (who does) but it sounds like he managed to do so nearly always on his own terms and he created an immense amount of beautiful music and did justice to his many talents. That is a good life. At least he, Bowie and Lou all had great long careers -- they weren't just cut off before they even reached thirty.

still really sad, though

Raspberry Beret would also be on Sam's playlist maybe? (I LOVE that song.) He also did a beautiful version of Starfish and Coffee on the flippin' Muppets http://www.jukebo.com/prince/music-clip,prince-on-the-muppet-show,suvux.html

I could've sworn he did Raspberry Sorbet on Sesame Street, but I can't find it. BUT! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g60vme5_-e0

I HAVE NOT SEEN THIS IN YEARS

It's so generational, too. My facebook feed has been filled with woe, but my younger coworkers shrugged and moved on.

I can't even get my mind around this one--like someone should have told today "No, I'm sorry, this is WRONG. Go back and do it right this time."

What does 2016 have against artists anyhow?

(So now I'm imagining what kind of moves "Kiss" would inspire.)

I've never understood that kind of thinking from young people, even when I was young. I loved knowing about earlier generations' works, I lived for that sort of thing. It's always baffled me how oblivious people are about the movers and shakers who changed the world enough for the things they enjoy now. But of course, I was always way out of step with everyone I knew.

I thought of Kiss as a total classic swing step--that kind of loose, step step ball change spin kind of thing. I could totally see them doing it!
