Date: 2017-01-08 02:12 pm (UTC)I was born week Star Wars came out in theaters (so I always know how old it is! We'll celebrate 40 together this year!), and I am 1) envious of your experience and 2) forever guilty I deprived my SF loving mother of the chance to see the movie the way you did, because it would have been her favorite thing too.
The closest I get to this is finding and being in the fandom for LOTR when those films came out - I think it may be the nearest SF/Fantasy fans got to that kind of "not sure about this, it might suck" to "OMG LIFE CHANGING" overnight experience since Star Wars. (But nothing will ever be Star Wars, I think.)
