December meme #3
Dec. 5th, 2014 07:51 pmFor today,
ixchel55 asked: What inspires you to make a vid? Do you go crazy for a show/pairing/movie and then shop around for a song that matches it? Or do you hear a song and think 'Man, what a great vid that would make' and then think of a fandom to match it to.
So, all of the above?
At various times, I've been in both those situations, and I've also put things on the list because I saw someone mention an idea on their blog or journal. So there are lots of things that inspire me. I think the most common way is that I hear a song--either something new to me that I hear on the radio or in something or on my player, and I think, oh wow, that would be perfect for such and such fandom/or would be perfect for a vid, I wonder what it fits for? I am really, really motivated by music, and I'm always looking for new things and my range of interest is incredibly wide. So that has a tendency to spark me most strongly.
But I also fall into a fandom and then avidly start searching for things. This past year, both of these things came into play with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, because I immediately started thinking EVERY SONG in the universe was a Cap vid song. Honestly, that still hasn't dissipated. Some of them were me looking for things to convey all my FEELS, and others were because I was listening to something or watching something, and I knew that needed to be a vid.
Last year for Festivids, I wanted a song in a certain style and with a certain lyric type, and I asked on Metafilter to help me find one. It was amazing to me how few people actually bothered to read the question and responded with these wildly off the mark songs, but the one person who did gave me two really amazing ideas, one of which I made a vid for the challenge with, and one that became my Club Vivid song this year. So ideas can come from anywhere! You just have to be open to them.
