For today, [personal profile] ixchel55 asked: What inspires you to make a vid? Do you go crazy for a show/pairing/movie and then shop around for a song that matches it? Or do you hear a song and think 'Man, what a great vid that would make' and then think of a fandom to match it to.

So, all of the above?

At various times, I've been in both those situations, and I've also put things on the list because I saw someone mention an idea on their blog or journal. So there are lots of things that inspire me. I think the most common way is that I hear a song--either something new to me that I hear on the radio or in something or on my player, and I think, oh wow, that would be perfect for such and such fandom/or would be perfect for a vid, I wonder what it fits for? I am really, really motivated by music, and I'm always looking for new things and my range of interest is incredibly wide. So that has a tendency to spark me most strongly.

But I also fall into a fandom and then avidly start searching for things. This past year, both of these things came into play with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, because I immediately started thinking EVERY SONG in the universe was a Cap vid song. Honestly, that still hasn't dissipated. Some of them were me looking for things to convey all my FEELS, and others were because I was listening to something or watching something, and I knew that needed to be a vid.

Last year for Festivids, I wanted a song in a certain style and with a certain lyric type, and I asked on Metafilter to help me find one. It was amazing to me how few people actually bothered to read the question and responded with these wildly off the mark songs, but the one person who did gave me two really amazing ideas, one of which I made a vid for the challenge with, and one that became my Club Vivid song this year. So ideas can come from anywhere! You just have to be open to them.

Interesting answer! I tend to save songs on my player into a "fanvids" playlist for possible vids later. (But if they have been there forever, I forget what fandoms, ahahaha).

For my Wilby Wonderful vid, I knew the mood I wanted and did a keyword search of my library and found the perfect song that way.

SO I can see how you have so many avenues of getting the perfect music for a vid.

I participate in this music swap every year on Metafilter, and making the mix discs every year has helped me find so many songs I forgot about along the way. I tend to ignore a lot of my library and don't make enough playlists, and I really should do that more.

Oh, I envy people who go manage to go the music vid - idea later route, it's seems so much more intuitive and I think you get a better fit. Your vids are prove of that. Unfortunately I don't belong to that group - I DO have a 'songs that would work great for a vid' list, but if I find vidding time I normally have a vid bunny pestering me, and that ALWAYS comes in form of visuals without a song idea. And then I have to hunt down the right song, which is sooo hard, and I never feel I even get remotely close to what I need (genre, mood, gender of singer, lyrics - there's always something that doesn't work ...)

Hunting down is always so hard for me. Because I'll often have SUCH a clear idea of what I want, but can't always find the song I want and don't have time to listen to 40,000 songs. All these music services online…they should offer one for vidders, where we input what we want and the vid bunny, and then they offer us matching ideas.

Yup! I'd totally pay good money for that!
