I mentioned this to Christy above, but it's really tough to convince people about that would of contstruction when great writers like Steinbeck use it as a way to convey character. I see it a lot in Mag 7 fandom, even from people I think might actually know better -- probably it's there in other western themed things as well, I'd guess. But I also notice that I never see could of -- this makes no sense to me whatsoever. grrrr.
