I have too much crap in my tiny brain
Sep. 1st, 2004 10:42 amFor those people who watch this journal solely for the Usage Posts, I swear I will do one this week. On, I think, adjectives, since it dovetails with the last one on adverbs. They're hard to write and tend to sap my energy and I'm never sure if they're really of use, so it's easy for me to slide out of the habit.
One of the people in my writing group gave me his air miles to buy a ticket down to San Diego to see my sister and take care of her during her second chemo barf-o-rama weekend. I have a very, very difficult time asking for help from people, and even more trouble accepting help when it's offered to me and I didn't ask, so it was hard to take them, but he was insistent and it definitely would have been an unplanned expense. So I'm all sniffly about it. I don't know how much time I'll have to goof around, as I'm only there for three and a half days, really, but if there are any SD-area fen, it might be nice to get out of her hair for a bit. I know the area a little, just haven't been there for a long time and so my memory is hazy about some of the neighborhoods, but I can always find my way to Pacific Beach and Mission Bay neighborhoods. I'll be there from Friday the 24 to later Monday, the 27.
In my continuing obsession with the Fast and the Furious, I finally broke down and bought my own used copy (poor
movies_michelle would otherwise never get her copy back) and of course they had a used copy of A Man Apart, so I had to buy it. Had to, I say -- really, I'm sure there was a gun to my head. I could feel it. It was a much better movie this time around -- it's amazing what the rosey tint of obsession-colored glasses will do for you. I didn't think it was awful the first time, but you could see all the places it went wrong in trying to follow a formula, and it's too bad because it really isn't a half-bad story, and I like the incredibly intense emotional core. The friendship between Larenz Tate's character and Vin Diesel's would be a slasher's dream if it weren't for the happy marriage (shades of Frank Pembleton, huh?), but there are two shining moments in the movie that make my shallow heart skip a beat -- Vin in a half-face mask, picking up a shotgun and pumping it with one hand, then pointing it at the bad guy, the focus all on his arms and his pretty eyes; and then a night-time break-in scene where he's gunning for the bad guys in a white wife-beater and thin sweatpants. Phwoar. So it's a keeper if only for that.
Plus, for my Deadwood friends (
killabeez,
feochadn, michelle, and all the rest of you), Timothy Olyphant plays one of the bad guys. In a thousand years I would never have made the connection even though I have a freakish ability to remember obscure actors who are barely seen in a movie from ten years ago. He is SOOO different in this movie than he is from Seth Bullock that it took me almost the whole movie to go, oh my god, it's Seth! He's a total horrible wiseass evil shit, but he looks good doing it! And I love the way Vin's character completely abuses him. Very fun.
I feel I should make another F&F vid soon before my obsession dwindles, but the Keen Eddie discs come out next week. OTOH, I don't feel much like vidding at all, so it's hard to work up enthusiasm. I'm afraid that my F&F love will vanish as quickly as it arrived, and without warning. Probably it's because there's just not enough stuff to sustain it -- need (good) fic and vids and stuff. Why the freaking hell is such an incredible slash relationship so underrepresented? :: does not look at
maygra about the idea she does not have:: ::does not wait impatiently for more story from
mlyn::
My buddy
trollchild is turning her web site into a haven for writing and art and other forms of expression. She is looking for prose from 500-1,000 words, as well as other things. Check out her site at http://www.mysticsavage.com to look into it.
And that is enough brain-dumping for today. I have to save empty brain space for the likely suckage of Hawaii. But Michael Biehn!!! with guns!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Date: 2004-09-01 11:14 am (UTC)Well, it wasn't like I had the DVD for a while (*does not look at a certain someone*), so no biggie. And I got a great vid out of it, so yay! *g*
I do want to see "A Man Apart," though I had heard less than stellar things about it. And Timothy Olyphant does tend to show up in very different things. "Broken Heart's Club" is an eh movie, but he is adorable looking in it. And makes out with a guy. *g*

Date: 2004-09-01 01:21 pm (UTC)I'll probably know more about what to expect with my sister once she has her first treatment this week, so it will give me a better sense of what time will be like, and I can be in touch closer to when I leave. Thanks!

Date: 2004-09-01 01:25 pm (UTC)There's "Seventh Sign"--which the Encore channels seem to be determined to single-handedly keep alive. But I guess you're right, he's really known for the guns and nukes and all that. I have no objection to this, personally. *g*

I feel a Michael Biehn binge coming on. Speaking of binges on certain actors--the weirdest summer I had was when I watched something like five Harrison Ford movies in a row without meaning to.

Take it already! Give appropriate credit to Khal for the bases, though, if you do.
