A new L'Abattoir vid for Deadwood, Come to Jesus by Mindy Smith, is up at my site. It's all cast, 28.8 MB in the QT Divx .avi format, and my site is password protected; if you have the password from before, it hasn't changed, and if not, please use that link on the main vids page to request one and I'll autorespond to you (not comment here). L'Abattoir is me and Jo ([livejournal.com profile] feochadn), btw. My blurb is: Suffer the children of Deadwood.

I'm stealing a page from [livejournal.com profile] sisabet and saying that if you really love me, you will download the VLC media player, linked on my page, if you haven't already, because this is, I personally feel, a beautiful show and vid, and the regular QT plays its own file terribly, all herky-jerky and blurred. But VLC is lovely and stunning and flawless, and I will rend my garments and tear my hair out thinking of people watching this in such an ugly way. I won't be able to sleep at night. So, either DL it and watch things that way, or lie to me and say you did so I can rest easier.

I realize I can no longer judge how people will react to things we do. I thought no one would like Darkness, Darkness, and everyone loved it; I thought Streets on Fire would be impressive, and no one liked it. I have no idea what to expect on how people will react to this, other than to say, "those girls just aren't right."

But, we aren't, and that's okay, because we like it that way. I'll write some process thoughts down later. Feedback gratefully received of any kind; recs or links are doubleplus good!

Unfortunately it looks like spectacularly bad timing. I expect rolling tumbleweeds of disinterest.

This reminds me that I’m not sure whether I ever told you how great the Sharpe/Teresa vid you made was – I think I did, but I can be horribly forgetful sometimes. So this is me saying what a lovely piece that was and how much I loved it!

You did, and thank you -- again, and still, because it's always lovely to hear. That vid... it's quiet and short and for a teeny weeny fandom, but it's so, so dear to my heart. I don't know that I've ever been as obsessed with making one as much as I was Time of Her Own. So I'm very glad you like it, oh queen of the Sean mania!

Awww, yay! I want all my Sharpe-friends to see it - because although I really have no informed way to talk about vids, yours does one of the things I really love which is that the lyrics and tone of the song perfectly match the characters that you're depicting. It IS the perfect song, in both lyrics and music, for Sharpe and Teresa!

I'll second that VLC plea, because it plays even bad avi files that are highly compressed better than QT. Way better.

So true -- I've decided it is my mission on earth to make everyone get VLC!

Hee... I got your wonderful LOC and will reply as soon as I can. I got weirdly busy as soon as I posted that process thing, and haven't had enough time to sit down and give it the response it deserves. But thank you, first off.

No sweat! After this vid, I'm looking forward even more to doing a vid of my own. I mentioned this on a post at [livejournal.com profile] blackhawk_slash (first vid I've seen for that fandom, and it wasn't bad), and the poster got suuuuper excited about me doing vidding. It was almost embarrassing. :)

Gorgeous, Gwyn.

What I love about Deadwood is that while it pulls no punches with the suffering, it also offers up moments of grace, and you captured both beautifully in the vid.

It makes me long for the new season!

Thanks for sharing. :)

It really does skirt that line between hopeless and hopeful in an odd way, doesn't it? I think of how the second season ended, with the sadness of Alma and Seth, and yet Al's hopeful face, and the dancing... it's such a rare, special series. We loved putting in some of those things -- Jewel's hopefulness when she goes to see Doc, and just Trixie putting on that pin... stuff like that makes you realize how true to life the show is even while it is larger than life.

Oooooh. I've still only seen the first season, but one of the things that most impressed me about the show (especially with the Rev. Smith storyline) was how powerfully it captured that sense of the frailty of human life and human bodies - how easily they break, how ugly and visceral life can be, and conversely, how precious that makes every moment and every relationship. And the vid is a fantastic, concentrated dose of that. Good stuff.

Then again, maybe I'm just not right either. ;)

Oh, thank you! And hey, if you're not right, all I can say is, "join us, join uuuusssss." It's odd to me now, but my two favorite characters in S1 weren't necessarily the ones I have the most fannish passion for (Seth and Sol, and Al) -- but these understated characters whom I have come to love in an entirely different way. I love Joanie such much it freaks me out, and the Rev. Smith just... gah. I became so wrapped up in him that I could hardly bear what happened.

Great use of video clips. :)

An inspired songchoice for the continuing theme of painful death in Deadwood and the hardships of life at the time. I've already put it on my video iPod. :-D

I finally get to see and it is so horribly beautiful - Deadwood does not flinch at the brutality of life, in fact it revels in it as a continuing theme. We are nothing but bags of flesh and bone caught in a struggle that would seem pointless except for the connections one makes. And y'all get that absolutely- the violence and pain and just the fact that life is hard and dirty but people still strive and there are still connections forged and moments of grace. This is really achingly lovely.

Horribly beautiful is one of the ultimate compliments I think we've ever had. I love that. Because I think that is really what the show is -- horrible and beautiful, and if we captured that then I feel very proud. I sometimes worry about myself that I love pain and misery on film so much, but... I think when it comes to shows like this (or Angel or Buffy) it's just so... resonant, I guess. If that makes any sense!

Oh, wow. I don't know the show at all (except via vids), and I wish I had more intelligent things to say about this, but I want to post first thoughts before I cheat and read the process notes.

I'm overwhelmingly reminded of Michael Lesy's book "Wisconsin Death Trip" - this sense of real people living in a historical context where unbearable levels of violence and horror are commonplace, the incredible fragility of human life.

Thank you so much, that's a really lovely comment (I have heard of the book, but not read it). It's not an easy show to watch, I will say that, but it's one of those that reward the viewer a lot for doing the hard work of sticking with it. I almost gave up at first, but have never been so glad i stuck with something.

OMG, this was such a joy to download with my new high-speed internet connection. I saw the posting for it on my last short trip to the library and bemoaned the fact that I couldn't watch it yet.

It was well worth waiting for.

I've only seen the first season of Deadwood (I own it now) but this makes me yearn to see the new eps. I'm a fan a Deadwood not only because of the incredible writing and acting but because of the realism, the way it pulls no punches, and neither does this vid.

You include the shows harsh, violent and pitiless reality of what life was like in an outlaw mining town but at the same time you've included the unexpected moments of grace and incredible compassion that could also be found. The dichotomy of life during this time in history is one of the things that's always fascinated me and you captured it beautifully.

I've never heard the song before but it's incredibly haunting and apt and the quiet moments of voice and guitar matches the sepia tone of the film perfectly while the greater volume of the chorus highlights the more emotionally explosive moments of the clips.

Bravo luv! Just beautiful and powerful and moving.

I've been bad about announcing fic and vids that I think worthy of attention in my lj, but I think this is an excellent time to start.

BTW? Still waiting for that Brotherhood of the Wolf vid.

Yay for high speed!!! It will change your life, trust me, but then you can never go back. i thought this job requiring me to have it would be temporary, and then I would go back to dialup to save money, but now I realize that DSL is going over my cold dead body.

thank you for the lovely comments. I'm just champing at the bit to get second season on dvd because they do such an amazing job with their discs over there at HBO, but we were lucky to be able to get it in time to catch it (and, also, that I have now have some money to help support my friend in receiving it monthly). It is even more beautiful and harsh and amazing, if that's possible. And Bill's shadow still looms over so many people.

I'm still waiting on that Brotherhood vid, too! I've got two vids on the plate ahead of it, for Escapade, but then I will probably make it right after that. I need to work on a movie vid, definitely. Something I can focus on a small amount of clips and really doing something with.

I thought Streets on Fire would be impressive, and no one liked it

I LOVE "Streets on Fire." I have ALWAYS LOVED "Streets on Fire," even when I saw it unfinished during a visit. I have told you I LOVE "Streets on Fire." And I will continue to tell that I LOVE "Streets on Fire," despite the fact that either (a) I don't count as a person, or (b) you don't believe me.

And if I had DSL, I would be downloading the Deadwood vid now, despite not knowing the show at all, because I am certain it will be good and I will like seeing it. Alas, no DSL, but I can probably find someone local who has downloaded it.

You are right -- I remember now showing that to you when you were here and you liked it. I forgot. Laura likes it too, and my friend varina8. That one went over like a lead balloon at the con, though -- I know we're not supposed to remember the con as the be all and end all of the experience, but the reaction was harsh. It's also never DLed. My stats page, it doesn't even show up on! But I still love it. I don't care. It was a cool show and I thought we made a cool vid.

I'd offer to send down a disc for the Deadwood vid but I fear I will just end up sending you another right away -- it shouldn't take me too long to do this Angel/Lindsey vid, so when I'm done I can make discs for the SF set.
