Don't trust that day...

Sat down to log in this morning only to see a couple guys wandering around my backyard, right up by my office window. Fortunately one of them was wearing a company cap, so I realized it was the plumbers probably here to do the first leg of the full copper repipe (I so wish I had a demon to brutalize whenever I say that). Only, I was in my robe, little tiny white thin cotton robe, with nothing else on because I'd just gotten out of the shower, so I leapt up and ran to go throw some real clothes on, and yes, that was what they were here for. Of course, no one had bothered to tell me this. When I called the plumbers they said they'd send them away, but then the guys told me that they would be mostly digging and wouldn't be turning off the water till later. So I let them stay. Wakes ya up really fast.

They've been here all day, digging away, crawling around under the house. I feel sorry for them, because the dirt in the front yard is the most hellacious hardpan. But I see some great rocks I can steal for my back garden! It's a big rock -- none of the other kids have a rock that big.

I shipped off most of the discs I'm bringing for the orphan table for VVC. A couple people have asked me about the meaning behind the names of our discs, the ones me and Jo put out as L'Abattoir. Well, back in the day at Escapade, we used to have comment sheets at the vid show that had all kinds of things to fill out, such as whether you liked the song, knew the fandom, what you thought of the vid, etc. And vidders would often gather afterward to read them and either be depressed or laugh or whatever. When Jo showed her Band of Brothers vid to Ebben? Ne andro lontana from the opera La Wally, it kind of mystified a bunch of people at the con (it later found its audience, fortunately, at the first VVC), one of whom wrote on her comment sheet that she didn't understand the point of the vid, and was it saying, "War is hell? .... Don't fight in the snow?" Because a lot of the shots she used in the vid were from the episodes set during the wintertime Battle of the Bulge.

When interest was generated by the vid at VVC that first year, and people wanted to get their hands on a copy, I figured it would be a good time to put together a collection of our recent vids, since I knew the Media Cannibals wouldn't be likely to ever put out a collection together again. There was a lot of stuff sitting around to make public, and I was still vidding on VCRs, so had no online access or way to get them there. I thought about a lot of titles for the collection, but I kept coming back to the "don't fight in the snow" comment, which had become a favorite catchphrase of a lot of the people we hung out with, almost as good as "nice use of video clips."

So, that is where the title came from, and the subsequent discs... honestly, I just had no idea what the hell else to call the collections. You can only get a little over an hours' worth of video on iDVD discs, so I figure that as long as I keep vidding, I'll have to keep coming up with variations on a theme, but so far we have Bride of Don't Fight in the Snow, and Son of Don't Fight in the Snow (the current WIP), and the next might be Gozilla vs. Don't Fight... or maybe as [livejournal.com profile] melina123 suggested, Don't Fight in the Snow on a Plane. Who knows? This could go on forever. I suppose I ought to mention it in the liner notes, but there's never enough room.

VVC in two days!! Aiieeee! Still so much to do, and I still feel like hell. I really hope I don't get bronchitis, as I am prone to. I'm taking a redeye, so I have no idea what condition I will be in for the first day. I pray that the heat wave is gone by then, because I'm not sure if I can handle it there. I'm a major heat wimp, and anything over 80 knocks me flat.

Oh, and I have a couple more Vox invites, apparently, so email me at gwyneth at drizzle dot com with your e-mail address if you are interested.

Oh crap, please don't tell me you sent it to my old B'ham apartment address! I have a forward command on my mail, but I want to save you the stamp or something.

I hope you feel better soon.

You said you'd mailed out disks. I have one coming, right?

Just wanted to know where you sent it, unless you're waiting to give it to me in person.

No, no! Sorry. Shipped the discs to myself at the hotel for the con's orphan table. You can have whatever discs you want afterwards, just let me know and I'll burn them while you're here the next time you come over. (Or we get together wherever...)

Hee! Great to get the background on the dics titles! Coincidentally, I took your discs with me on a visit to my Dad this past weekend, and he was, well, awestruck. Now wants his own copies, so I will be sending you another SASE (DASE?) to make that happen. Know it will be a while though, what with VVC and everything.

It was so cool to watch the vids with my 70-year-old Dad. He freaked (as I knew he would) over the Robbery Homicide vid, demanded that his wife come and watch the Deadwood vid, and we both were pretty much speechless after the Band of Brothers vid, which I think is something on the order of a masterpiece, I truly do.

Anyway, thanks for a memorable series of hours with my Dad, and hope you don't mind that I plan to repeat some of this in my next LJ post...

Oh, wow. That is quite a thing to hear! I almost don't know what to say, especially hearing this at a time when I've become so discouraged about paying for the site when so few people seem interested in getting the vids. Your dad sounds exceptionally cool, too -- and your mom! I can't imagine showing anything like this to my dad. But he was never much of a video movie kind of guy -- that was always my sister's and my department.

I'm so thrilled that the vids brought you all some enjoyment, and I will definitely make sure to point Jo in the direction of this comment. It's one of the nicest things anyone's ever said to me. thank you for letting me know.

Fun to hear about the origins of the name. The Don't Fight in the Snow on a Plane idea is hilarious. I can't wait to get some of your dvds at VVC and see the vids on them. I really hope you feel better, that'd be the worst time to be sick.

Oh, I love that title! You know, for some reason, whenever I saw "Don't Fight in the Snow" I would always think of the Witchblade vid because there's snow in there. *g*

See ya soon!
