This was the vid I showed at the VVC premieres show. Sorry for yet another ginormous file, but it's a looong song that I cut as much as I humanly could.

How do you sustain hope in others in the face of unimaginable loss, when you're in danger of losing hope yourself?

My site is password protected but I am so tired right now I can't possibly hope to answer PW requests (assuming there are any!), so for a little while at least, this is what you'll need when you click the link above:

So many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro, who made this way, way better than it would have been. She really saved my butt when I needed a beta, and I'm incredibly grateful for her keen insights. In fact, I took all her suggestions except two and one of those was just because I am not skilled enough at the tech to get it to not look funny when I did what she suggested.

Wow. That's a song I wouldn't naturally associate with BSG, but... my favorite vids are the ones that take me somewhere I wouldn't necessarily go on my own, perspective-wise, and you nailed that for me. With all the sturm und drang, political turmoil, killer robot attacks, etc. on BSG, it can be easy to look past the quieter emotional arcs, and it's nice to have my attention drawn back to this one. Sucks to be Roslin, like it sucks to be everyone else on this show, but it's what she does in response to her pain, and her opportunities, that makes her such an extraordinary character.

...and if I watch this one more time, I'm going to start sniffling and yelling, "BILLY! NOOOOOOOO!" so I think it's time to put the vid down and go to bed. :)

I'm glad -- and I think you're definitely in the majority in terms of reaction to the song, it was something I heard more than a few times. So, I'm glad that people were willing to give it a shot anyway and see it through to the end. I just love Roslin so much, and MM and everything she does, and something harder or faster paced didn't tell that part of the story for me, I guess.

Billy! Don't be a hero! Poor guy -- and poor Laura for losing him.

This video is absolutely beautiful. It's not a tone that I would have associated with Laura but you've won me over.
Thanks for sharing.

I really like this. It's a lovely portrayal of Roslin; much softer than I tend to expect, and I loved that here. I found it very moving on a gut level -- the choruses so get me -- and also with plenty of things to ponder for rewatch. I know I'll be watching this many times over. Thanks very much for putting this up. You've made a Roslin fangirl very happy. :-)

Thank *you* for saying so -- I'm especially glad to know that there are so many other Roslin fangirls out there; I think that's turned out to be a big benefit of making this. For a long time I thought I was alone in my adoration for her, especially because most of the attention is on the young sexy kids (understandably, with such a young fanbase) or my extreme love of EJO/Adama, and I have really enjoyed learning that there are so many other people like me! MM does so many amazing things with just her eyes, that it was a wonderful opportunity to showcase that character.

Okay, can I just echo what others have said and say that this vid is simply beautiful?

I stopped following BSG after the first season, and therefore am probably missing a number of references, but if I thought it had an emotional range as moving as this I would probably still be watching.

For me it brilliantly captures the melancholy that Roslin must feel given her circumstances without ever delving into the maudlin. And to end it on such a lovely scene underpinning the hope that everyone is so desperate for? Words fail.

Not really explaining myself too well here am I? Let me know if you want me to try being a bit more coherent, but needless to say I loved it!

Thank you, so very much. Believe me, you explained very well, and it made me feel a lot better about the vid as a whole. I had actually worried a lot that ending the vid on a hopeful note would bother people, because the series itself is so hopeless, but to me, that speaks to everything Laura is about, and it felt right, here (and I usually love the dark endings, but...).

Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this vid--it's a lovely portrait of Roslin, and I liked both the moments of connection that you show and the moments of disconnection, where someone is putting Laura on a pedestal, which must become rather daunting after a time.

Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I am very flattered that you asked about saying something on the forum. I wasn't sure if you wanted to upload the vid to your forum or if you just meant to link to it, but I'd rather not have the vids put up in another place or archive of any kind (sometimes people pass vids around and nothing bad happens, but sometimes they end up on public places where the vidders can get in legal trouble for using copyrighted material). A link to the vids site would be wonderful, though! I usually request that people ask for my password by using the e-mail link at my vids site, but since there may be a language barrier and you may not have all English-speaking folks reading it, you could provide them the password information along with the link (http://gwynethr.net). It would be really wonderful if you could make it clear that I would ask them not to spread it around, or upload the file anywhere else, or link directly to the vid itself. (I'm afraid I don't speak French, or I would try to explain all this better!)

Grey Eye Glances are a tough band to find, to be honest. They are not especially well known but you can get their albums from their own website, http://www.greyeyeglances.com/. Their music is always lovely, so you can't find a bad song on any of their records, if you ask me!

I think this is one of the most notable Laura character study vids. as others have said, your Laura is not my Laura, precisely, but the way you delve into her very personal pain is compelling. I love that you've made it the story of her spiritual journey -- a very emotional, human one, rather than a remote theology as it's sometimes rendered.

Thank you so much! I know it kind of falls outside the usual type of song for her, but I think in a lot of ways that's really what attracted me to it. I wanted to find something different in her, as you said, spiritual. They give us so much to work with on her.
