Saturday, the biggest day

I don't think I can do a proper Premieres show commentary until I've actually, you know, seen the vids, so I'm just going to do the rest of Saturday, the VVC day of days.
My biggest problem with recounting this con is how much of it I've forgotten so quickly. This is very weird, because I remember everything, to the point that people like to make fun of me for the minute detail I carry around. And yet... this time I've forgotten most of it. Must be the drugs.
I started the day off with the Symbol and Metaphor vid show, which was quite enjoyable. Only a few of the vids were new to me, but they were great vids, and I especially loved Butterfly's Dr. Who vid The Beauty of the Rain. Wonderful song choice, wonderful editing. In some ways, it was like watching a sister version of the Literalism vs. Metaphor show and panel I did a few years ago (a show I loved so much that I wish I could have gotten a disc copy of it to watch over and over again, especially since some of those vids aren't online or disc anywhere else). I love vids that peel back the layers of context and visuals to show you something else about the fandom. And it never fails to surprise me that There's No Way Out of Here still elicits that strong of a reaction, even after being showed a bajillion times and having been around so many years. I guess it's true -- I never really will be able to top this vid, even though I don't think it's the best thing I've ever done. It just has its own weird legacy independent of me.
I wanted to go to the God, the Devil, and Bob show but it was opposite
laurashapiro's Great Transitions panel, which I wanted to see. I use a lot of transitions since I... uh, transitioned... to computer vidding, and I sometimes don't know whether that's a crutch I've come to rely on too much, or something viable. For me, a lot of the transitions have been a way to use musical aspects -- the blended stills of After Rain for the cascading notes, or the cross-zooms on Blood/Lust that take advantage of kind of in-out beat, which Laura used in her panel, or the goofy push wipes in the Keen Eddie vid Too Bad that come in on phrase changes. I still am a very hard-cut driven person, but I've really enjoyed experimenting with transitions, and it was interesting to listen to others talk about what makes a failed or successful transition. I'm still not sure if it's a crutch for me, but it gave me something to think about.
Lunchtime was spent at a Mac vidders get-together, which was fun (all us Macolytes in one room, yay!), but I had to jet fairly early to get to my own vid show, scheduled right after lunch.
Vid as Collage: Using Additional Source was another vid show that I ended up loving so much I want my own copy to watch again and again. I get very excited when I put something this wonderful together -- I'm all, "Don't I have amazing taste?!" There were just so many great vids here, old and new, but I think my favorite was my discovery for this year's show (every year, I discover something new to me that may be old to other people, but I've never seen before),
obsessive24's Post Blue vid for Firefly. I am eternally grateful to
aycheb for pointing me that way: the vid not only used really creative and unusual additional source in the form of text and visuals, but she built such a layered vid that I think I could watch this a 100 times and still find something different in it. Every one of Nicky's vids I saw this weekend knocked me out, but this one is the knock-outiest and I could tell from others' reactions that they were as blown away by it as I was.
ETA: The idea for this panel/show came out of a conversation
sisabet and I had in comments that I'd made on her fantastic Icebound Stream, which was a cornerstone of the show, and the most talked-about vid in it. She said, gosh, it sounds like a panel for VVC. It totally was!
The panel part resulted in some interesting discussion, and I was really grateful to both
sockkpuppett and
alvafan for making it to the panel and giving us a little history and comments on their own vids in the show. When the discussion about the Media Cannibals' Sentinel vid The Man Song came up, I commented that I remember people saying negative things about using blooper clips of, in one case, Blair's actor kissing Jim's actor, and I could never understand why. Fortunately,
cesperanza was there, and she pointed out something that I had never actually thought about and was an excellent point (and I'm paraphrasing very badly here, because, brain fade): that for a lot of people, the slash aspect that's especially apparent in a show like Sentinel is subtextual is part of creating a slash vid where the universe of the vid looks like they are in fact romantically involved. And by using something as overt as the blooper kiss, you're sort of taking away a lot of the subtlety of the slashy aspect of the vid. Which makes total sense to me, but I know I have explained it badly, so I hope Cesca will correct me.
I think I was one of five people who didn't go to the Lord King Bad Vid show -- we went to show
merryish some representin' for her Digital Axes for Stone-Age TV panel. I missed the show, so they had to run some of the vids for me, but the group was so small it was like a nice little coffee klatch and we made with the much laughter and had a good time. When we could hear each other over the laughter and screaming coming from the other room. ;-)
justacat and I went to dinner to plan out a Pros vid we want to make together (well, really, just me helping her to make a vid she's been thinking about for years). It was great -- I've never long-distance collaborated with anyone before, and it was fun to have some face time to do the initial planning.
Then there was the Premieres show, where at least my pain was over fast, being the fourth vid in the show, and I'll get to more on that later.
In a million years, you could never have convinced me I'd want to attend karaoke, but
absolut3destiny's enthusiasm and adorableness are so infectious that I had to go check it out (especially after Merryish had told me earlier that she would be doing the MC's 500 Miles by herself), and damn if I didn't actually have fun. Enough, even without booze, that I am considering doing it next year, especially if
feochadn and
movies_michelle's Oz vid Love Boat makes it in. I left before the end of the show for the same reasons I didn't stay up too late on Friday, but once again, roomie
morgandawn was still up, nursing her cold, so we yammered until we couldn't yammer anymore, and fell asleep.
Good god, I can go on, can't I? And I haven't even done Sunday and Monday!

Date: 2006-08-19 06:18 am (UTC)(I downloaded a bunch of your vids and will have to send you detailed feedback later, but am currently in the throes of mad-vidding, so please forgive me for being a few days late with it. :) )

Date: 2006-08-23 04:38 am (UTC)I have to say that my vids will be very boring, especially compared to the kinds of amazing stuff you can do. I have a lot of trouble understanding tech, and have never been able to use it for more than the most basic of things. I'm also hamstrung by still thinking like a VCR vidder, and I'm not sure if that will ever change. So, that's my caveat if you do watch them -- they're pretty dull compared to a lot of stuff out there, especially the one I showed at VVC this year (that's what nearly everyone tells me, at least).
