Changing of the Guard (3086 words) by gwyneth rhys
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Captain America (Movies), Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers, Peggy Carter/Steve Rogers
Characters: Steve Rogers, Peggy Carter, Chester Phillips, Jim Morita
Additional Tags: Loss, Grief/Mourning, Canonical Character Death, Gretel the Howling Commandog, Military Animals, World War II, Sadness
Series: Part 4 of War Dogs
Summary:
This is, like, definitely the saddest story I've written in this fandom, even though there are no "deaths" that aren't canonical and no actual animal harm, just a really sad doggo because, well, Captain America: The First Avenger is a damn tragedy when you think about it. I've just been in a really sad mood for a long time, especially about writing, and this has been in my head for a while, so it felt like maybe time to write it—not exactly a happy birthday present, but, well, happy 101st, Steve.

Picking up Gretel’s leash, he tried to pull her toward the jeep, but she stood fixed, staring at the plane.
