Goodbye, my sweet friend

My baby girl, Olive, died last night. It's all my fault, I was closing up the house because I'd had the doors open since the house was 97 degrees inside when I got home. She decided that if I was closing up, it was time to go walkabout, I guess, and something attacked her. I tried to get her back in all night, but when it's hot out, she would often stay out all night and show up like, what? in the morning after I'd spent a sleepless night worrying about her.

No need to lecture me about outdoor kitties. I lost the war with her a long time ago, and I've lived in fear of this day. She'd gotten so much better in her old age, content to lie under the grill in the shade on the back deck, or hang out in the window perch next to me while I worked.

She slept on my bed next to my head, and hated Blues kitty so much she tried to move in with a neighbor once. Every morning they slap-fought while I got their food ready. She loved milk more than anything in the world. She loved to play, even at her age, and chase fuzzy wooly balls around, and she talked to me all the time and loved to lick me, especially after I'd put lotion on.

She was my best bud, and I hate myself now for letting her go. I love her so much.

I am so sorry. It wasn't your fault - some cats just won't be happy unless they can roam, and that means a tradeoff between risk and their happiness. There was nothing you could do.

Some cats are just outdoor-roaming cats -- we have one of those, and trying to keep him inside would be miserable for him and us. You didn't do anything wrong.

I'm going to add to the chorus - this wasn't your fault. Some cats are just so much happier being able to roam, and clearly Olive was one of them. For those cats, it can be riskier being forced to stay indoors, in different ways.

There's no way to protect them from all the dangers; all we can do is give them the happiest, most satisfying life we can while we have them. You totally did that for Olive. ♥

She was beautiful, and she sounds amazing.

I'm so sorry!!! My cats are all indoor/outdoor, and I can't imagine it otherwise, because I know how much they love being outside. It's a trade off, but you you shouldn't feel guilty. Sad, yes, but her life clearly was good and happy! All my thoughts are with you, because its so hard yo lose them!

And she sounds like she was a headstrong kitty (moving I with neighbors? Lol) and she certainly was gorgeous.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Olive and you were very lucky to have each other and I know you cared for each other the very best you could. What happened to her wasn't your responsibility, but her happiness was and it sounds like she was a very, very happy kitty.
