So, last day of the 30 days of TV meme! Today is

Day 30 - Saddest character death

Hm. I had to think about this one for a while and I still haven't decided. I expect a lot of people would peg Joyce's death on Buffy as the one that would get me the most, because it came so close on the heels of my own mom's death. But I really didn't like The Body; I found it stagey and preachy and full of annoying and precious, twee actorly moments. I was a lot harder hit by the episode after The Body, which felt much more real and accurate and heartbreaking to me.

And I don't watch a lot of the shows that have big, Emmy-nom-targeted death scenes, so that affects choices, too. I would probably pick Wesley's death on Angel except that it just pisses me off too much. I have no objections to a good character death -- I actually like it when it's done well -- but once again, I felt like we were set up so baldly that it left a bad taste in my mouth (not that I didn't cry like a baby when it happened). And the... characters on The Wire who died were all sad, but in the scheme of things, you kind of had to expect them, so I don't know if they can qualify as saddest (well, okay, Wallace's, which is kind of at a level of heartbreaking and devastating that I don't even think it qualifies for this meme). And then there is Rev. Smith and Mr. Ellsworth on Deadwood, both of which just ruined me emotionally and still continue to do so after all this time, and of course, William.

So that leaves...but I think possibly the most heartbreaking for me is Frank Lundy on Dexter. GOD. It destroyed me, first when he went down, and then when Deb tried to deal with it because as I've mentioned before, I worship Deb and her relationship with Frank was one of my all-time favorite 'ships on TV. He was such a good man, and he was so close to finding Trinity, and Deb loved him so much, and... just the look on her face when she lay there, shot, seeing him dead... arg. For me, last season on Dexter was totally and completely about Deb and Lundy (and Anton, too, before she broke his heart), and that is one that will always haunt me (and which I need to vid).

Yeah, Lundy's death is a good choice for this one. Terribly, terribly sad. (And Rev. Smith! *SNIFF*)

I wasn't a Deb fan until S4. She always bugged me in so many ways, but I don't know, something about the actress and the character leveled out in S4 and I really liked her. Her mourning of Lundy, that moment between her and Dexter where she's crying and can't breathe and can't have anyone touch her, she just killed that whole scene.

Ah, so much about S4 I loved, if only they hadn't done that final, completely TV thing to do catch that kinda ruined a lot for me :-/

Now that you mention it, I think Lundy's death is where I divorced myself from this show once and for all. It was well done, and all, but I have been watching only for Deb for so long that I really did not want to go there.
