ETA: Whee! Proof that I'm a legitimate writer (bet you never really believed it, did you?) The issue of the online publication Bad Subjects just came out. I'd written a piece about my experiences in the Seattle WTO riots a few years ago, for an earlier edition of the publication; due to circumstances, it's ended up in this edition devoted to protest cultures. Sometimes I spend so much time as an editor of other people's work that it's such a surprise to see how an editor shapes my own stuff, but thank you, C, for your work on it. There's a lot of interesting stuff here to read; my piece is about halfway down the contents list.
I have been thwarted in my efforts to see Cold Mountain every single day this week. The theatre I wanted to go to has a ridiculously early showing, and then not again until late in the afternoon, so I misssed it by getting up so late Monday. Then on Tuesday the fridge broke down, then on Wed morning we had so much snow and slush here that it wasn't worth fighting. I had a fun day with a friend planned for New Year's, so that was out. And then today I managed to actually get out of bed and get my morning ritual done fast enough to get out, only to find all the ways out of here completely closed down. I know that it snowed a little last night, but not around here much at all, and so I was completely pissed off that they'd shut all the bridges down, and we couldn't get out. Apparently it was icier than I knew.
I'd really wanted to see it, as I adored the book and find Minghella's adaptations for books I love to be very interesting. And I'd wanted to do a best/favorites of list for 2003, but kind of feel like that's a big one for me to see before I can do any kind of list. Sigh. I guess I'm just not meant to see it on all this vacation time. I've had tons of time off, but haven't gone out to one single movie since Christmas eve.
Instead I worked on updating my web site a little, and putting the recent fics into the memories section here. Now I just have to find the energy to finish my La Femme Nikita vid, but this web updating saps my strength!
Sorry it's not Buffyverse related -- for the two people who care about Magnificent 7, this story, called Last One Standing, is one I did for a slash zine project called Bystander, that the inestimable X created last year as a benefit for a friend. She drew a number of pictures in different fandoms, and those of us participating wrote stories based on a bystander point of view in those fandoms, then she crafted each of the couple dozen zines by hand. Some really wonderful writers participated, and X's art is, as always, gorgeous. Fandoms include M7, Star Wars, Phantom Menace, Harry Potter, and Highlander. A couple friends accused me of cheating because my story is from the POV of one of the main characters, but for me, that's what the picture said -- I saw Chris as a bystander n his own life at that moment in the picture, and that's what spoke to me. It was a great challenge, I'd never written a story to specs before, and never anything that short; it was also the first time I'd had the chance to participate in a project. I really loved this story, which surprised me, especially the "lady and the tiger" ending, but I've never heard any opinions on it besides the project coordinators', so I've often wondered if people hated it for the very reasons I loved it!
The zine is in PDF format, so I can't make a direct link for individual stories. One story in particular I would like to rec at the project is Marie Blackpool's Small Stars, Falling. I think it was my favorite there, and it's a lovely look at Han and Luke through Leia's eyes, in the original Star Wars. Please, though, don't take any of the stories -- and especially the art -- for distribution. People have been stealing and distributing X's art lately to an astonishing degree; and while Mag 7 isn't the kind of fandom that usually attracts the unsocialized, asshat jerks who think anything online is theirs for the taking, other fandoms included in this zine such as Harry Potter do seem to have more than their fair share of these nimrods. She's had to take things offline because of this thievery, and I swear if you make her take this down, I'll go Buffy on you: I will hunt you, find you, and kill you. So there!

Date: 2004-01-02 04:03 pm (UTC)Thanks for the links to your Blake 7 story and the zine. I've been reading lots fic outside of the Buffy fandom these past few weeks (and really enjoying it), so I'll definitely check them out.
