I know everyone and god is doing an Oscar post, and I'm only adding to the stress of the folks who hate LotR and are probably seething about the wins, but I'm a very happy movie lover tonight. I had a great Oscar party this year, though missed a couple of wonderful people due to airplanes and sickness, but the folks who came were all fun and funny and we had a great time. And I think stuff on my shelves actually moved when we screamed so very loudly in unison and punched the air for Peter's big win, and for the film's big win.

This is the first year I can ever recall where any of the nominated best films would have made me happy with a win -- even Mystic River, which is the only one I haven't yet seen, though wanted to (and I have read Lehane's novel, so I'm partway there). It was also the first time that I can ever remember wanting two movies to be able to tie so very very desperately -- Lost in Translation is every bit as dear to my heart as Return of the King, for obviously drastically different reasons, and it's hard to accept that it would get run over by bigger movies. That's the one true good thing about the Golden Globes -- they're kind of a joke in some respects, but the fact that they divide into comedy/musical and drama makes so much more sense. It's also why Bill Murray got the shaft for the Best Actor award (or hell, Johnny, for that matter), and it makes me sad -- the only thing that made me sad tonight was Bill not getting the award he so richly deserved for one of the finest acting performances I've ever had the pleasure to watch.

I'm glad that Master and Commander got a few token chances ;-) and took home at least a little gold, and that Lost also got something. I adored the Mitch and Micky performance by Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara. Alison Krauss is exquisite and dresses every bit as divinely as she sings and plays fiddle. Sting has completely turned around my recent distaste for him. At least Charlize didn't lose it completely (and I still will never ever stop thinking of her in conjunction with Harmony -- "no threesomes, unless it's boy-boy-girl. Or Charlize Theron." I don't think Renee Zellweger or Jennifer Garner could be any cuter, and I think that Jamie Lee and Susan Sarandon are living proof that you can still shake it when you're older. Damn, they are a couple of hot babes. Not to mention Catherine Z-J. I was stunned that Johnny Depp actually showed up in good clothes, and his hair was perfect length for him. He was gorgeous and I'm not even that big of a fan!

The hobbits looked wonderful, all of them, but of course especially my beloved Billy. Liv Tyler was like a goddess descended to earth, and when she put on her glasses to read the noms, I thought I was in heaven. How adorable. Annie Lennox's dress will probably get crit in a big way, but I loved it -- fashion forward without being dorky. I don't even know how to pick a best dress, but I may have to go with Renee, again. Though Patricia Clarkson was stunning in the tan dress, and Nicole, much as I hate her, showed some serious style, and Charlize's dress -- and Charlize herself -- was breathtaking. Jude Law looked fantastic, as did Will Smith (as always), and while I still do not like the straight tie look for evening men's wear, Tom Hanks looked great too. And Ben Kingsley -- god damn, that man knows how to dress. Holly Hunter's orchid organza confection was so adorable.

I was surpsised how much of the humor worked for me this year -- the thing with Blake Edwards was darling, and Jack Black and Will Farrell were hysterical with the "you're boring" song. I even liked Owen Wilson with Ben Stiller, and I really, really dislike Owen Wilson. I still hate, more than anything else, those dead people popularity contests -- I wish they would make people stop applauding. And I was kind of frosted that Gregory Peck got a half tribute, because I still think he is one of the classiest acts ever to come out of Hollywood. I wanted Djimon Hounsou to get the Oscar even though I hadn't seen any of the supporting actor nominated performances, simply because the man is hotness personified. Phwoar. And they had John Cusack as a presenter! How great is that? I actually thought I would keel over from the funny when Adrian Brody did the Binaca spritz. He's so adorable!

So overall, it was a wonderful night until [livejournal.com profile] alexfandra nearly killed me when she cracked a joke about the guy who won best... something... makeup? with Richard Taylor of Weta Workshop. He had an Elvis pompadour, and we were all joking about that when she piped up with "it's the return of The King." I nearly died from laughing and choking. Then we found out the guy's name was Peter King and we really did almost die. And they got it. My boys got the gold ring. I was about 95% believing they would get the final recognition of this landmark achievement in cinema, but I had doubts because of what Jackson called "the f-word - fantasy." I was that five percent worried they wouldn't do it, and they did, and so I'm satisfied, even if a few things had to be ignored because of that. In my perfect world, there would be more ties, but I know better than to hope for that sort of thing. And now I have to go box up all the food everyone left for me!

it is pretty fecking thrilling to see it happen isn't it? that odd thrill of vicarious pride and happiness as all the boys got up on stage with pj? and though fran's hair was a little strange, i still had to love it. gotta agree with you on the half-ass gregory peck tribute but i guess with that many folks to be honored they had to fit in the time alloted. whatever!

ooh! i have to tell you i finally saw that amazing vid "my west hollywood lifestyle, whatever" that you'd mentioned a while ago. fantastic. i haven't laughed that hard in ages and now i'm running around imitating it and my rl friends are looking at me oddly.

ok enough letter writing on your journal. glad you had such an excellent oscar party and shared it with us.
