Can I ask a stupid question about last night's Alias episode, Blowback? Aside from the incredible stupidities that seem to be passing for the show at this point (I'm really in danger of giving it up, and I don't give up on my shows very easily -- I'm the one who stuck with X-Files till the bitter, bitter end), did anyone else wonder about the fact that no one on their staff caught a huge, glaring error, cuisine-wise? Or maybe, I wonder, is there really a wine called Chateau Briand, besides a dish of seasoned beef tenderloin called chateaubriand, named after some French nobleman or another? Possibly someone more wine knowlegeable can fill me in, but a quick search showed me that most people were referring to the beef dish. Yet Sloane suggests dinner and a nice bottle of cheateaubriand.

Ew. But please, if there really is a wine, fill me in. It's been bugging me since last night.

I've played it back a couple times, and he definitely says chateaubriand. Sigh. I always had this weird idea that at least, if the writers were morons, a worldly guy like Ron Rifkin could catch something like that, but apparently he's not so sophisticated. ;-)

I hate this show now. it's stoopit. But, I thought he invited her to a dinner of chateaubriand and wine. Tell the truth I wasn't paying real close attention. The show (or in biz talk, the "skein" and what the hell does that mean anyway?) doesn't engage me much.

It is really dumb. I mean, most of the time I'm okay with that and have fun, but lately it's been dumb strategically, which annoys me. And unfortunately, when they do things like this (I played it back a couple times, and he does offer the possibility of a nice bottle of chateaubriand), it kind of tips me over the edge. Weirdly, I guess I'm more forgiving of stupidity on Joss shows, or something...

I'm sure he was talking about Château Haut-Brion, a renowned Bordeaux wine, but he made the mistake of pronouncing it as if there was a "d" at the end.

Oh, and he also made the mistake of actually saying "château" before the name of the wine. Saying "we'll discuss this over a glass of Haut-Brion" would have been enough.

I knew about that chateau thing -- about not using it along with the name of the wine, which is probably what made me sit up and take notice (I know so little about wine, but I have major oenophile friends, so osmosis has worked on me a bit!). But I played it a couple times, and he's definitely saying chateaubriand. I guess whoever wrote it assumed that meant wine (like saying chateau Margaux or something), and unfortunately even smoothie Ron Rifkin didn't seem to know better. Hey, maybe you could get a job writing for them -- at least you'd get it right!

I played it again and really got the impression that he said "château Haut-Brion" - he detached the syllables slightly between "château" and "haut" (two identical "o" sounds. If I said it quickly, I'm not sure you'd hear the difference). But that may be because I know the name of the wine and automatically assumed that's what he was talking about. Plus, they seem to have a thing for Bordeaux wines. :)

Hey, I may be wrong. But that's what I heard the first time and I'm unable to hear something else now. But I admit it's difficult to catch and I may be imagining it. I'm such a dork that I repeated "château haut-brion" several times and the only reason I could hear the pause is because, well, being the one saying it, I knew it was there. :)
