Does anyone know where [livejournal.com profile] malisita went? I swear, I hardly ever look at my info page, but when I did recently I noticed her LJ was crossed out. Bummer.

After three months of waiting, I finally got my cool new Euro-style washer dryer combo unit. I bought it with my tax return, shortly after my sister died, more to just do something than anything else. And the first time they called me and told me it would be over a month before it arrived (they'd said a week), I asked, "Did the ship got stuck in the horse latitudes, and they're just waiting for a wind to carry them around the Cape?" The guy didn't get it, needless to say. Then the second time they called and said it would be another month (end of May), I asked if they really were taking the cape route instead of going through the Panama Canal. Still didn't get it. I made a joke about those three masted sailing ships being hard to plan for, and he finally laughed. So then June starts ticking by, and finally I get a call saying it will be here the next day. They installed it yesterday and took my old unit away, and I was thrilled because it's not stacking! There is space all around me! I did a load and everything seemed fine till it hit the high speed spin cycle.

Really, it sounded not unlike a Mercury 7 capsule taking off on its Saturn booster rocket. I thought something would explode. I thought surely this could not be right. So today I did another load, heavier, to see if that had any effect. OMG, it was worse. And then it went right into its drying cycle (that's the cool thing about these, you can just leave your stuff in there and it dries!) but partway through it shut down and started blinking its red start light hostilely at me and it smelled like burning rubber. Salesperson of course won't call me back and his voice mail is full. I am so pissed. Why can't I ever just buy anything? Why does buying anything always end with something that doesn't work or needs fixing or I have to call five people to get it right? I just don't understand this jinx. First the car, now this, in the span of two weeks. Usually I stagger my large purchases because I know that disaster always awaits me no matter what I buy. But this... at least before, while I waited three months for some retired old Swedish engineer to build it in his garage, I had a washer and dryer that worked; now I will have to take my laundry outside if this unit is defective... just too angry for words. And disappointed.

I'm just so... tired. Everything makes me tired right now and I don't have the coping skills to deal. Rats, car-buying disasters, washing machines that sound like they will explode. I officially hit the ground, screaming "incoming" as I go.

Not to be a total geek, but the Mercury series missions used Redstone, and later, Atlas booster rockets. Mercury 7 would have used an Atlas Rocket. The Apollo missions used the Saturn series of boosters. Too late, I AM a total geek!

Sorry about the W/D. Just a suggestion - stay away from gun shops, or don't invite me to go with you!

Of course you are right, I totally forgot everything I knew about the space program and totally fortgot about the redstone and atlas rockets. Dur.

I hate it when anonymous people don't give me a name, though, becuase then I don't know who to thank for correcting me!

Ouch! I'm so sorry the W/D isn't working right - one of the things we really like about ours is how quiet it is, and I know how much you were looking forward to yours!

I don't know what brand your W/D is but ... I have a stacking Miele, and when it was first installed we had precisely the same problem. Turns out there are some kind of ... something-or-others, "feet" or shipping brackets or something, that they use to protect or stabilize the unit for shipping but that *must* be removed when it is installed or else you get huge vibrating problems, like you describe. When the installers came back and removed those, everything was fine. Apparently this is a common problem - the installer forgetting to remove those things.

Okay, just looked it up - they're called "shipping bolts," and apparently (according to the various W/D forums I found!) it's not just the Mieles that have them. It's possible that this could be the problem with yours ....

Oh, you are a goddess! That's exactly what I was wondering about -- mine is close to the Miele, the Asko, and the guy said that they didn't know much about installing them. I couldn't exactly watch him, either, and I wouldn't know what they were supposed to do, but the only thing the manual says, unhelpfully, was "make sure the blah blah bolts and rods are removed." I don't feel anything back there, but I wouldn't know what to look for.

This is really heartening to know. I'm also angry because the salesperson isn't around until Friday. So now I have to wait even longer to resolve. Still don't know what the deal is with the overheating, but maybe they're related. Like I killed it or something. Thank you so much for teling me this! It at least makes me feel better about waiting till Friday.

Also, companies like that may have technical support. The company that made my shower head has technical support. I called them when my shower head started not shooting water right anymore. So check their web site, and if they have support give them a call.

You just sent this twice, didn't you, because you wanted to put that PW icon in there twice. ;-)

Alas, one of the things they are famous for is their wretched customer service in the US. After searching the web for people with this problem, I came upon posts where even their biggest fans admitted that they suck at customer relations. The manual has emblazoned in big letters to call your sales place, not them, first. So of course my sales guy is gone today. Anyway, at least I'm armed with what justacat told me, so I have something to go on.

My parents' washer's spin cycle sounds like a jet engine getting up to speed, a whirring that gradually gets loud, high-pitched, and fast. Was that your experience, or more of a frightful poltergeist-like shaking and rumbling?

Date: 2005-06-23 03:53 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gwyn-r.livejournal.com
Nah, it's the poltergeist one. It shudders and shakes and vibrates and sounds so awful that I thought it would explode, so I wouldn't even stand in the kitchen with it.

Well, there was a full moon last night, so that jinxed everything from the start. So remember, folks: never test out a new appliance during the full moon! Be careful out there!

Good luck on getting this resolved -- I hope it's just weird shipping bolts.

The wieners would have been traumatized for life, I tell you. As it was, Emma wouldn't come out from under the bed for the whole day! I think she was convinced I was trying to take the house down.
