Can someone explain to me how you "watch" a community, rather than joining it? All I ever see is a button that says "join this community" and a button you can uncheck to have it show up on your friends list. I'm completely baffled by this.

i think if you want to watch the community, you just friend it, without joining. hope that helps. :)

Um, that's what I was trying to say was the problem. There is no other option than to join it, and that's not what I wanted to do.

i think you just press the button that has the little head with the plus sign on it, instead of pressing the link that says "to join this community, click here". that's what i've always thought, anyway. :)

Having just done this (after a moment of confusion, heh) -- you just "friend" the comm. Ignore the "join this community" sentence and go to the bar with the icons...

I have never once seen any option other than to join it. You can uncheck the box that says you can see it on your flist, but that's not what I want -- I want to not join, but I don't see any other options.

When you go to the community info page there's a link in the words that says "click here to join" that's how you join. The next page it takes you to asks if you want to watch it to, and if you say yes it adds it to the friends list.

In order to just watch a community, you click the little person with the plus sign icon (the first one in the row of icons) you just watch it.

Joining it means you can make posts.
Watching it means it shows up on your friendslist.

I have never seen that option. All I see when I click "join this community" is the button to join, and the checkbox that says you can have it show or not show on your flist.

I also can't figure out how to unjoin. I have defriended a bunch of dead communities, but they still show up on my list of "member"! This is driving me batshit.

Ok, the join the community click here text is one thing. Don't click that to watch. *g*
(And right next to that is is how to leave. Click on the text that says "leave community". (also, uncheck on friends management page to unwatch.)

The watch is the person with the plus sign in the row of icons on the community homepage. There is usually person with plus sign, pencil, paper, heart, magnifying glass and gift box. That first icon, the person with plus sign, is the "watch" icon.

Well this shouldn't be one of those days because I too was a member of some communities for years (years!) before I figured out how to unjoin them after I defriended them. *g*

(We won't even get into the watch vs. join thing. Just yesterday I had to join a community in order to post in it. I thought I had, but, no, I was only watching it.)

Well, honest to god, I used to look for that "leave" link all the time, but I never saw one before. It must be something they fixed at some point after I gave up. I thought you could do it through friends list manage, but it only took them off the friends view, not unjoined me.

The ways of LJ are complex and mysteriou, and I am not that smart.

You know, I don't think I ever realized that one could have a community's posts showing up on one's friendspage without joining the community. So that's what "watch" means in this context!

If you just want to watch it, go to the edit friends (http://www.livejournal.com/friends/edit.bml) page and scroll all the way to the bottom. Type in the name of the comm in the "Add Friends" section and that way you can watch it without joining.

If you want to unjoin a community, go to the community info page and the first sentences at the top should say, "Below is information about the "ABC" community on LiveJournal. To join this community, click here. You may leave the community at any time." The text "leave the community" should be a link and if you click it it will give you the option to unjoin.

look but don't touch kind of community. you can reply, but unless you are approved to be a reviewer you cannot post a review. I think they may still be looking for reviewers.

It's the same procedure as when you're friending a person. You go into the community userinfo, just as you would go into a person's userinfo.

If you can't find the link to the userinfo page just type in: http://www.livejournal.com/~community name/info

There will be five icons at the top of the userinfo page. They look like this:


You click the one with the head image and the plus sign.
