Like a dumbass, I came up with another idea for a paired vidshow and panel for Vividcon this year, based on a conversation I had with [livejournal.com profile] sisabet in her LJ when I left comments for Icebound Stream. I was impressed with her use of outside source in it (OMGWTFPOLARBEARS!) and it started me thinking about other vids that have used it -- and sometimes taken a beating for it. So, the concom accepted my idea... and now I'm all freaked out I won't come up with 45 min worth of vids. Especially since there's usually a lot of scrambling and battling over certain vids among the VJs, who want a vid for their show, and my god, it can get ugly. (joke alert)

I need the help of the vid watchers among my f-list (which, boy, what did I do? Or probably not do is more like it -- I rarely remember to check my info page and man has there been a massive defriending. I guess everyone gave up on me because I never post anything interesting anymore or finished a WIP or something...).

Anyway. Have you seen some cool vids that use additional source -- stuff that's either from a different program, or a vid that uses deleted scenes, or gag reel footage? I'm especially looking for good vids that do this well -- I have seen a few lately that unfortunately didn't do it in a way I considered helpful for the vid, so what I'd really like are some vids that show how successfully it can be done. But if I can't find enough, then I suppose I'll go for the bad!

So far, this is what I'm thinking of for my show:
- Icebound Stream by Sisabet for Due South
- Too Long a Soldier by DJ for Professionals (god, I hope I can get a watchable copy of this -- looks longingly at [livejournal.com profile] tzikeh and her amazing vid library)
- My West Hollywood Lifestyle (Whatever) by Luminosity and Sisabet for Angel
- That excellent Starsky and Hutch vid by Morgan Dawn and Justine Bennet that I suddenly can't remember the darn name of
- The Man Song for The Sentinel by the Cannibals
- Possibly Carol's Highlander vid that uses gag reel stuff set to kazoo music, or
- Alex's Highlander vid It's All Been Done, because it sneaks in at least one scene from The Fifth Element, maybe two, that was used as waste video (the young vidders go "WTF?")

You can either give me suggestions here, or use the form at the Vividcon site. I'd love some more ideas!

There's an engaging Angel/Wesley vid by someone named Fractal Bat that uses some clips from Queer as Folk to construct an alternate timeline. Set to "Summer in the City." Very neat. Hope that helps some; I don't know Fractal Bat's LJ name but if I manage to hunt down a link later I'll pop it in the Vividcon form for you.

Whoops -- nevermind, that was ridiculously easy.

The vidder is [livejournal.com profile] fractal_bat. The yousendit link has probably long since expired, but that's the original vid post, and it looks like they'll reupload upon request.

Sure! And of course, you probably already thought of this one, but there's Killa's "Closer" that mixes Star Trek and porn footage -- I think it might have been part of various vidshows before, though?

I'll come back if I think of any others. It sounds like this will be a fun vidshow!

There's a Man From UNCLE vid that uses news footage of the Wall coming down, to a song by . . . the Scorpions, I think? I can't remember song or vidder name, but if this doesn't ring a bell for you I will look it up if you like. It's an older vid, as these things go.

No, it doesn't ring a bell for me, and yes, if you have time for the info, I'd love to know about it. Maybe one of the locals has it.

That's also a Deejay vid - to the Scorpions' "Winds of Change". It uses lots of Russian news footage - plus footage from the A-Team episode where McCallum guest-starred. And gwyn - I have a copy of Too Long a Soldier. I'm not *certain* about watchability, but I'll check it out for you. Of course, you could head over to deej's lj and ask her as well.

McCallum was on the A-Team? There was A-Team footage in that vid?

I never knew that...

Yes - when "Napoleon" and "Illya" have that nice big hug, that's from A-Team. They never hugged in the reunion movie, and Robert Vaughn said that was actually the inspiration for the A-Team episode, because he felt that was missing. :-D

I am, of course, now very intrigued! I will definitely check with Deej -- I remember that she said her betamax died right around the time I was starting to collect vids, and so I had never asked her for copies because I wasn't entirely sure she had them available, but maybe there's a way... my copies of her Pros vids were very bad, and that was because I was making copies from others before I learned about etiquette and getting originals from the vidders. I was such a freaking feral fan when I started out. I took a lot of edumacating.

Name of the Starsky Hucth vid is Testify.

and if you're running very short on time, you can show Flying Home (Due South) - 2/3 of the images came from outside source.

I used 3 clips from another movie in my Jeremiah vid - The Highway (but it was meant to integrate and not call attention to itself).

I'll keep thinking. I know I've seen others.

I was hoping not to use the same vidders and the same fandoms if possible -- one for everyone! -- but I have a feeling I will probably have to accept that I may have a plethora of DS and HL in the show. And you may show up twice! I definitely have Flying Home already in reserve, so no worries there. I didn't realize you used outside source for Jeremiah. Hm. Now I feel compelled to go look for it. ;-)

I know you've already got Icebound Stream for Due South, but Morgan Dawn's Flying Home from a couple of years ago uses some beautiful footage from outside source.

And I couldn't remember the name of the Starsky and Hutch vid either! I had to check the disk: "Testify".

From: [identity profile] gwyn-r.livejournal.com
Yeah, I was going to keep Flying Home in reserve, in case I didn't get enough and had to double up fandoms and/or vidders. I think this one may end up being a toughie for me!

There's another Starsky and Hutch vid that uses footage from their later shows / tv movies - "When I Remember L.A.", I think it's called. Aired at Virgule? Escapade? Z-Con? One of those.

Good call. That's "I Remember LA," by Barbara Presgrove, and it's on the con tape for ZebraCon 13 (I have the tape, if you need it).

Deejay's "Too Long a Soldier" uses some.

Morgan Dawn's one S&H vid (the name of which escapes me currently.

Killa's and my "Opportunities" uses bloop reel footage.

My "Scotland the Silly" is ONLY blooper reel.

I know that there are at least a few ancient S&H vids that make use of the blooper reel, but do I have any idea of names, no. The same for a bunch of older Pros vids that use other apperances of Shaw for older versions of Doyle.

Shallot's "Passion"

In a similar mode, Darcy's "Forever Young" which is overly sweet for my taste but does make good use of other footage to construct a vid for a siries of fanfic. http://www.gypsy-gateway.com/darcy.html

Nudge Ian for some anime options - depending on how you want to count it there are all those ones that have either fan drawings or smoothly incorporate two shows into a single frame (i.e. Tainted Donuts).

Yeah, I have a couple of those on the list -- I'd love to include the Cannibals' vid that uses one Martin Shaw insert, but there's a hangup with the revised version that Justacat put together for us, and it would be hard not to use a shiny version when I know it's ostensibly done.

I used Shallot's vid two years ago, which was the only reason I didn't want to add it again, but I may just do it anyway, since I like it so much as an example of this sort of thing.

I thought for some reason you mixed up blooper and real stuff on Scotland. I guess it's my lack of HL knowledge shining through. But good to know about Opportunities -- that one I didn't realize!

There was a Marita/Krycek vid by [livejournal.com profile] deslea that used external source of the actor(s).

I know that I've thought of a few other vids in the last two months -- I even wrote them down -- but I can't find the list. It will turn up, or I'll remember.

The Cartoon Heroes vid (SG1/SGA) uses behind-the-scenes footage.

I know of a Smallville vid that uses footage from several of the Batman movies to turn it into a crossover vid. Would a crossover like that come under what you're looking for?

Also, I want to second whoever mentioned the Comic Heroes SG1/SGA vid. It's an excellent vid.

From: [identity profile] gwyn-r.livejournal.com
YOu know, I've been pondering this since you posted your comment and I honestly can't decide where the line is between "outside source" and a crossover... I mean, in a way it seems like an easy answer -- if you're using two series extensively, or whatever, then it's probably a crossover. But if that's not the intention, if it's telling a story about the one character and there's a way to set up some kind of alternate text... arg! I could drive myself crazy. I guess I'll need to take it on a case by case basis.

Date: 2006-05-25 05:30 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bantha-fodder.livejournal.com
I'm pretty sure you'll consider it a crossover, but here is the link anyway: Only Me (http://tired-eye.net/videos/onlyme.php). I mean, a crossover IS using an outside source, right? So, yeah.

OH. Sorry, I was cruising around that person's site after I left you the comment, and this (http://tired-eye.net/videos/untouchable.php) is probably more what you're looking for, in terms of using outside sources.
