OK, fine, flist, you win. (Especially [personal profile] trelkez, but all of you win.) I'm halfway through the third episode of Community and I'm hooked. I really didn't want to watch this show, for a lot of reasons, including that I hate Chevy Chase and I've always thought Joel McHale was repugnantly smarmy, and I was also really afraid of it hitting my embarrassment squick so badly, but it's... incredibly charming. And funny.

Mostly it's Abed. OMG, he makes me laugh so much. I'm not sure I understand why Troy won the fandom cage match thingie that I confess I don't pay a lot of attention to, but maybe that will come with more episodes. (Though I do love his girlie sneezes.)

I generally have a lot of issues with sitcoms because of my embarrassment squick, but every once in a while some sneak through that I can handle, like 30 Rock and Big Bang Theory. I think this one's a keeper. Ken Jeong is a scary, scary genius.

Do the adorable credits go away completely? I just noticed on the fourth episode they're not doing them. So sad, if so!

Curse you, flist!

The thing about this sitcom is it does character development, so Troy starts out as more of a typical jock (insomuch as anything in this show is really typical), but he develops a lot and you get to see so much more to him. And then there is Donald Glover's line delivery which is a thing of beauty. As is the friendship with Abed. <3

The credits stay! Sometimes they go because of time issues, I think, but sometimes you get special ones for a particular episode. Very cute.

YES! to all of this.

I have a HUGE embarrassment squick and ditto your reaction to sit-coms, but I recently was pimped with two episodes (D&D and one other) and I was delighted!

It's definitely on my "to do" list.

\o/ COMMUNITY! I totally understand your reservations - I'm still not a huge fan of Chevy Chase or Joel McHale (or Pierce or Jeff, actually), but the rest of the characters and actors make up for it entirely. I have to admit I was also a little puzzled by Troy winning FMM because not only is Abed my FAVORITE EVER but I thought he was kind of the fandom darling...but I do have to admit that Troy's grown on me much more over time, especially in the second season. Also Donald Glover is amazing. Right now I would say Abed is my favorite with Troy as a very close second, and Annie coming up behind them. OT3 YAY.

Also, the credits do not go away - in the second season they get even better (themed for various episodes, the song is used in creative ways, etc). I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH.

Yay! Community! Troy develops as a character - they all do, really (even Pierce, though I still hate him a lot) - but my understanding is that last year, Community fandom put its weight behind Abed, and he didn't win, so they decided this year was Troy's year, and coordinated accordingly.

Abed is my favorite, but I also love Troy and Britta and Shirley and Annie.

Don't miss the tag at the very end. It's usual Troy and Abed, and it's pretty crazy. I never liked Joel McHale, but he works well here.

I'm the same with a really easily triggered embarisment squick, I can't even watch a full ep of The Office at all, and I never miss a moment of Community! Love it to bits. I think in the two years its' been on, I've had to skip maybe 10 seconds due to embarisment squick, which is unheard of, even in other sitcoms I watch (rare thought they are), like Big Bang Theory. I am still suprised that Troy won the match, espeicaly over Abed, but he does grow on you a lot. After the ep he did this season guest starring Lavar Burton, I get pretty close to understanding him winning the fandom match. He was AWESOME in that. The actor totaly deserves a Golden Globe nod for it.

And the credits do go away for most of S1, though they pop up every now and then, but they're back in S2 every ep. And every now and then, they get changed up to to better suit an episode's storyline. Like the drawings become halloween themed and such. In S1, they had to cut them to make room for the Troy & Abed shorts at the end of the eps, but in S2, they were able to budget their time better to fit both in.

I still love S1 Community, but for me it's faltered badly this season, mostly because creator Dan Harmon has started pandering to certain shippers. I know he's trying to keep the few viewers he has (it's up against the double-whammy of American Idol AND TBBT), but this was not the way to do it, especially as he'd created this great weird dynamic in which you could ship everyone with everyone else (except Pierce, of course - ew).

I am the exception, though - mostly all the old fans still love it this season.

Troy suddenly goes through a lot of development late in season 1 and into season 2; I didn't notice him much in early season 1 beyond "hmm, hot" but at this point he's seriously my favourite character on currently-airing TV.

It tickles me pink to see a big swath of my Flist succumbing to the awesomeness that is Community one by one. I guess we have the FMM to thank for! Abed is probably the breakthrough character of the show. My understanding is that Abed represented Community in last year's FMM, so the fans decided to rally around Troy this time, and they mounted a hell of a campaign. But a win for Troy is a win for Abed as well, because Troy + Abed = an unbreakable unit. I guarantee that you'll get to love Troy if you keep watching -- he grows a lot as a character in the second half of season 1 and especially in season 2. And Donald Glover has *brilliant* comic timing.

The good thing about the show is that each ep is only 22 mins long and you only have 1 1/2 season to catch up on. It's also a bad thing because you can mainline is very quickly, and afterward, you feel dejected because there is no more new Community. Wahhhh.

Curse Thank you, flist!

There. I fixed that up for you. *g*

COMMUNITY! I love it! I'm so glad you're on board because it's an awesome train ride and they have their moments of pure cheese and look away, yes, but they have so much more to make up for it, too. And the emotional ties keep getting better and no one lives in a bubble and they expect you to remember Old Stuff in newer episodes. So, SO GOOD. (BTW, the D&D episode has the absolute best intro credits evar.)
