Since Community came roaring back with its 5th season premiere last night, I thought I'd make today's rec a Community work:

Raise Your Glass (For Me)

This is [personal profile] dualbunny's Club Vivid vid from this year's Vividcon, and it was hands down my favorite vid of the con. This captures everything that's so wonderfully insane about Community, but also shows what's most heartfelt about it -- that this group of underdogs and lunatics have found a family in each other, in their school, and that no matter how badly they do in the world, they are wrong in all the right ways (and they can always party on their own). Every clip here is perfectly chosen, perfectly edited, and I just can't watch it enough.

I watched a movie once with a friend, and afterwards, she was quiet for a bit and then said, "That was unsatisfactory." I laughed my ass off -- not unsatisfying, but unsatisfactory. Made the whole thing so much more precise. So I've used that for years when I'm unhappy with something -- and last night's Community was very unsatisfactory for me, as was the Big Bang Theory. They both had great moments at the beginning but I wasn't terribly happy with the main storylines.

Especially Community -- that was squirm-inducing, for me, and I really just hated everyone in the study group for that last bit. I don't like feeling that way about characters I love. They are going to have to redeem themselves somehow for that. The one thing I truly loved, and that I screamed with laughter about: Michael K. Williams, who should from now on be in everything ever filmed, lamenting the complexity of Legos these days, with the music from Field of Dreams playing behind it. That was such brilliance I can't even speak of it.

(And it was also especially funny to me because just a few weeks ago, I was asking the same thing of [personal profile] belmanoir -- I don't understand Legos where everything's made for you. When I was a kid, you had to make your own stuff with blocks, they didn't come pre-configured for you. I don't get it!)

Right now, I'm at a place with BBT where I want it to be about the ladies. I love Amy Farah Fowler so much, and Bernadette just rocks my world, and Penny with them is just... she's so much more wonderful when she's with her GFFs. They need to move in together, ditch the boys, and wait for a hot guy to move in across the hall.

I have many, many things to say about VividCry 2011 (TM, [personal profile] sdwolfpup), but I am under a serious huge deadline and I have to spend some time thinking about how to express it. I had dreaded it in many ways, because I knew there would be a lot of crying around the loss of Sandy, but what I hadn't expected was the level of moving vids and conversations and other things that made this a... I don't know what the word is. Cathartic? Not quite right, because I'm still sad. Transformative? That might be, although there were a few minor unpleasantnesses that made me feel not entirely different from how I normally am. But it was very, very special, and I have things to say about that.

So for now I will post the first of my premiering vids from the con. I need to do some tweaking to video files for my Club Vivid premiere (and I also have some things to say about the theme I worked with), so I'm not sure when that will go up. I will just say that SDW is right and that one of the clips really should be changed, but I can't figure out what to do with it, so here it stays. I think the Viddler file is kind of bad, but I'll put streaming here anyway -- the DL is a lot nicer.

I had such a ball making this. I don't know that I've ever had a fandom with such a wealth of material to work with in just two seasons. I've wanted to vid this song for about 15 freaking years, since I first started vidding, and to have finally, finally found the fandom for it just makes my heart grow about three sizes.

Last night I had a dream that took place in the Firefly universe, primarily with Zoe and Jayne. I know that Mal, Kaylee, Simon, and River were elsewhere even though I don't think they were in the dream (although I don't remember all of it, just a few minutes of it). It had to be post-Serenity the theatrical movie, because Wash was gone and Zoe was trying to move on. I don't remember what I was doing, other than discussing things with them as we did some kind of adventure thing. Zoe and Jayne had had a romantic history before Wash (clearly my dreams Joss themselves, since she met Jayne in the Out of Gas flashbacks) and they were trying not to get reinvolved, though they both wanted each other. Jayne was a whole different guy, very soft-spoken, sweet, thoughtful, and intelligent, even though he still dressed like the Jayne Cobb we know and love, and apparently that boorish Jayne was a front that he used for some kind of deep undercover thing.

At some point the dream turned into something else entirely, but I was definitely enjoying running around a space station with them (it looked a lot like the place in The Message) and finding out about Jayne's real personality. My dreams are rarely fannish in a good way, and almost always devolve into something bad or a flat out nightmare, so it was nice to be with characters like Zoe and Jayne.

I am so glad I've discovered Community. [personal profile] belmanoir and I watched a bunch of episodes the other night, including last week's, which I thought was a kind of genius of meta-ness that I have never seen the likes of before. At first, I was all "Oh, crap, a clips episode" because I hate clips episodes. Then I was all, "I saw that episode, but I sure don't remember that scene." Then I thought, with the third clip, "Hey, they're doing episodes we never saw," and then I finally realized Oh. My. God. It's a clips episode of clips that never happened. Whoever thought that piece of genius up should get an Emmy, really.

I loved that the clips included, as well, their constant fighting, and a couple of Lord King Bad Vid type montages of UST. (Although, I'd toyed with using "Gravity" for a vid, and now I'll probably never be able to listen to that without laughing.) It's clear that the people involved in this show are fans. They know how fans think, and what they care about, and subvert it so perfectly.

I'm desperately behind in my vid for Club Vivid... it's awful. The deadline is this weekend and I'm only halfway done, but I feel like I've run into a brick wall and can't get the most important parts done. I've never worked up this close to a deadline before. I hate it that I'm getting later and later with my vids every time I make something for a con lately. And I have to start on the premiering vid immediately afterward. (Which, btw, thanks to everyone for voting in the poll -- the winner by one vote was Community.) I'm not the kind of person who likes to work up against deadlines; I prefer to have time to let things sit, percolate a bit, and then go back and fix the problems that become clearer when you have time away from them.

I'm not as excited about Fast Five opening this weekend as I'd hoped to be -- I think it's because I don't have anyone I share the fandom with to go with to the movie. It's not something that's much fun alone, and it's kind of depressing to go to something you feel so passionately about all by yourself. No one to squee with and grab their arm when Dom and Brian look like they're going to kiss or fuck each other or something.

All right, fine, Ewan McGregor, almost everything is forgiven, even that Polanski shit. (Although you're on notice; don't slip up again.) It's impossible not to tilt my head and go "d'aaawwww" at this picture and feel my heart grow two sizes:

In other news, I'm continuing with Community watching, and loving it. The Halloween episode just about did me in, with Abed's hysterical Christian Bale as Batman impersonation. And I loved the ChristmasMr. Winter episode, and the debate team one. I'm officially hooked. I even was excited to realize that a song I've wanted to vid for over a decade finally has a fandom! I've never found anything that works for this song, and now I have, and it makes me v. v. happy.

OK, fine, flist, you win. (Especially [personal profile] trelkez, but all of you win.) I'm halfway through the third episode of Community and I'm hooked. I really didn't want to watch this show, for a lot of reasons, including that I hate Chevy Chase and I've always thought Joel McHale was repugnantly smarmy, and I was also really afraid of it hitting my embarrassment squick so badly, but it's... incredibly charming. And funny.

Mostly it's Abed. OMG, he makes me laugh so much. I'm not sure I understand why Troy won the fandom cage match thingie that I confess I don't pay a lot of attention to, but maybe that will come with more episodes. (Though I do love his girlie sneezes.)

I generally have a lot of issues with sitcoms because of my embarrassment squick, but every once in a while some sneak through that I can handle, like 30 Rock and Big Bang Theory. I think this one's a keeper. Ken Jeong is a scary, scary genius.

Do the adorable credits go away completely? I just noticed on the fourth episode they're not doing them. So sad, if so!

Curse you, flist!
