Construction starts on Monday. Augh!!!

This was a total surprise to me. They called me for the pre-construction appt. for today, but I had no idea that meant they were bumping up the delay from mid-Sept. to... a couple days from now. That means I have to move everything out of my kitchen by Monday. OMG. And I will have no living area to speak of for months, squished into the corner of my living room... augh!

Augh! Augh! Augh!

Now that it's finally here I'm in a total panic. Partly because I don't have enough time to get things out of here, and partly because... augh!

Well, ugh on the short notice, but yay on it finally starting. Soon, you will have a lovely new kitchen! Okay, soonish.

We had something similar happen when we had our kitchen remodeled. We'd decided to save a bit of a money and do the demolition ourselves... and at the point where we thought we still had two weeks to go (i.e. we still hadn't pulled anything out of the kitchen at all), the construction company called to let us know they could move everything up and they'd even throw in the demolition, free of charge. Oh yeah, and they wanted to start the next day.

We ended up spending all night hauling stuff out of the kitchen and into the garage and basement... where we also worked to set up a temporary "kitchen" to use during the six weeks they said it would take to do the work.

So, I really have felt your pain... but just think how much better it'll be when it's all done! We were lucky, too, that we had a good team working on our kitchen. They ended up finishing the project early and they still did a fantastic job. But yeah, that mad scramble when they move things up like that is not fun!

The lead carpenter was "there there"ing me with a "it's always like this -- delay delay delay, then suddenly we start the next day and people get into a panic. And then we tell them to relax and calm down." The big thing is just trying to make room in the living room for the fridge and microwave/cart, because the couch is taking up too much space. But I don't know how I can get it out of here that soon. (To M'lyn's place, it would be easier if I could put it up on craigslist or something.)

I'm trying to keep my eyes on the prize, but... ack!

*pets* God, I've been there. Hang in there! Sooner done is sooner over with. Focus on that?

I know, I know, I'm trying to keep my eyes on the prize. But it's hard! I've never really done anything like this and sometimes it seems impossible!

Yeah! at last! During my long drive today, I was contemplating what we'll cook in your new kitchen.

Did I mention it's a long drive?

Need some help moving stuff? I could come over tomorrow (wow, does it feel weird but good to say that!), and I am certainly accustomed to hauling and shifting things by now.

oh, good god, no! Don't you even think about it -- you deserve rest after all this. If you want to come over and laugh at me while I run around like a mad squirrel, though, you're totally welcome!

Take lots and lots of pictures. Every day take pictures. Not only do some of us have a construction jones and we need our fix, but photographic documentation can prove useful if there are problems down the road. The great thing about digital cameras is it costs almost nothing to take and store pictures. If you never need them, dump them. While you are at it take notes at every construction meeting. Document every passing conversation that includes any kind of change order or variation from the scope of the job. You'll be glad you did.
