Not a lot of stuff to report. It's the dragging on ad infinitum part now, where everything is almost ready to be done but there are still these little things everywhere, and completing them isn't possible because they hinge on something else. I had a bad cold this week (my god, I've gone through two whole boxes of Kleenex!) that just doesn't seem to want to go away, I can almost, almost use the kitchen but not quite.
The new sofa came yesterday, and I miscalculated on the dimensions. It's fine lengthwise in both directions (it's a chaise left side sofa, which I've always dreamed of having), but I hadn't quite figured on the depth of the seating and now my beloved coffee table with three deep drawers' worth of storage and a cool '20s look doesn't fit. Dammit. Now I'm going to have to find someone who wants it, as well as my lonely single armchair-without-arms, and I hate doing things like Craigslist (anyone local want a good chair and a gorgeous coffee table?). I'm going to have get something square or round, and there aren't a lot of choices for those, I guess everyone wants long coffee tables. But I love the sofa --it's really out of scale with the size of the room, but I'm not making this space for anyone else but me and my guests, and so this will make a great viewing TV/reading on the couch/conversation pit area and that's all that matters. They also delivered my dining room chairs and the bar stools, but of course, no dining table yet and no bar counter, either.
That comes tomorrow, I hear -- soapstone countertops, then the tile guy puts in the backsplash. I have the week off, which I usually take so I can go up to Vancouver and avoid my birthday, but I knew this year what with the project and my birthday being midweek, I was unlikely to find anyone to go with me and to have the time away from making decisions. Brent thinks it'll be largely wrapped up this week, but I don't know. I can't quite believe that yet, I guess.
Brent likes to write notes, either to himself, or to me, on things. The walls were full of scribbles, and I got a kick out of these on the plywood counters I have right now. The first one is a note to himself, and the second one is for me, when we were having trouble with the pendant light fixtures and I didn't know what to say to the customer service people. I have this image of years from now, someone doing more remodeling, and tearing stuff out and finding these notes.

For those of you locals who helped me with the Great Carpet Tear-Out of 2007, you would not believe how amazing they look now (I'm still not sure it was worth the painful fumes, but I think it was, maybe). And even more amazing is that the photo on top? That's where the big hole used to be of the cold air return. It's all floor now!

I realized when I was taking pics of the floor that a lot of people haven't been to the house since last June, and they haven't seen the new front door that came in over the summer, either.

And this is the only other big kitchen thing besides trim work and such -- the doors for the utility closet. I really have always hated louvered doors like these, but the irony is that it's required by code that they be vented, and the only really logical choice is this style. I did have them paint it the wall color though, so it's at least less annoying than if they were white, and they are nice and solid hickory, rather than cheapo rickety kinds like you usually see.
