Well. It's finally just about done. We failed final inspection, but Brent pretty much expected that, and once we take care of a minor permit issue and put the smoke detectors in the bedrooms (boo! I hate the things and really don't want green glowy light in my eyes), they will sign off, and Brent has a few more small things to do, but nothing earth shattering. The appliances are all moved back in, I can cook on the stove, and use the sink and the disposal and the dishwasher, and now I'm trying to move stuff back in and figure out where to put it. It's surprisingly baffling. I'm afraid a lot of my pics are very blurry, and I apologize. I can't seem to hold the camera steady enough when the flash is off, but the flash washes everything out.

A closeup of the coutnertop. It's hard to tell because it's so blurry, but the lighter spots are like crystals -- or geodes. Which is kinda cool, since I came from a family of rockhounds and we had geodes all over the house.

The sink of doom. With the faucet of doom, too. I can't believe how much trouble these caused. The faucet is in sideways, really, though it's not that bad. I barely notice it anymore, but at some point someone will probably ask me why it's like that. But I am so excited to have a pullout sprayer! And my lovely filtered water dispenser on the left -- when it runs, it looks like a flow of prisms, due to the aerator hole shapes.

This is a closeup of one of the pendant lights (now that they work with their big honking ugly transformers). It's hard to see the glass frit inside the glass base in a picture.

This is the finished kitchen looking from just inside the entryway from the living room. Of course we got a little bit of sun just as I started taking these pictures, which washes everything out.

Right now, the glass cabinet doors are out at the stained glass place, and I have a feeling will be out for a really long time. But there will be glass cabinet doors on the top part of that, and then once all the paperwork is gone, I'll probably put something like a vase or bowl there on the right of the phone.

Chandelier and dining table. I love that the chandelier is on a dimmer so it can go bright or ambient lighting. It's made of these beautiful Murano glass ribbons, and when the floor vibrates, like when the washing machine is on spin or a big truck goes by, they sound like glass wind chimes. I'm not thrilled with the table, but it was the right size and had some interesting detail in the slate, so that's why I got it.

The bar counter behind the table. I have so far only had a chance to sit here once and eat, but it was nice. The stools and the chairs are so unbelievably comfy, and it's just kind of nice to sit there and read and eat and look at the lovely space.

The corner. Sorry this is so blurry. I'm just so happy to be able to cook on the stove. I keep forgetting to turn the vent fan on. I haven't had one in so many years that it doesn't occur to me to turn it on.

This one's really blurry, sorry, but it shows the bookcase and how the view looks when you first come in from the living room. It's just so cool to see through, with no walls blocking the way. When the walls were there, people would get so confused -- they thought you could go through to the bathroom that way, and so would inevitably go around the wall into the kitchen, and then come out, trying to figure out the correct path. Now, there's no confusion.

The view from the sink. I love that I can stand here and look at this instead of a gross, ugly, pocked wall with bad plastic backsplash, not to mention stupid cabinets.

There's also a landing now. I can't paint the house till spring at least, so everything looks a little run down, but as soon as I can I'll stain the railings and plant some stuff, and maybe try to build out a patio with all the bricks, if I can afford it. If I have a new job by then... sigh. I have a keyless entry for the backdoor. It's pretty cool. I don't even have to worry about keys.

This is the view to the living room from by the bookcase. I have to move the old extra furniture out and find a smaller coffee table, but otherwise, it's pretty nice and while it's cozy, with a sofa that's really too big for the room, it doesn't feel too bad and will probably be better once I get a shorter table. I just love being able to lie down, watch tv, read or something, and Olive has both her perch and the throw there, just for her. She seems happy with things.

A young couple came over today who are getting a kitchen remodel from my contractor. They wanted to see the soapstone counters. It was fun chatting with them. And the other night, the woman who did all my window treatments a few years ago came by to help me find some new ones for the kitchen, and as soon as I opened the door, her jaw dropped and she shouted "Oh my god!!!!" She couldn't get over it. In a way, it isn't just that there's the addition, and a sparkly new space. It's that the old space looks so amazing and different, too -- the floors, the missing walls, the paint colors, all that stuff comes together to make it seem like someone waved a wand over my house and actually made it kind of nice.

It's gorgeous! I love the color of the counter tops with the wall color. Beautiful!

And I love the sink and your side-saddle faucet. *G*

I suppose the real test is, do you feel that it's all worth the expense and incredible upheaval in your life the last few months? 'Cuz from this side of the photos, it really looks sharp.

Pretty darned amazing. I like how shiny it all is. And those pendant lamps are to die for... Nice location on that bookcase, too.
Congrats on survival!

OMGWTFBBQ HOUSE ENVY!!! That is incredible!!

As for the smoke detectors, if they *have* to be in the bedroom, and not just outside the bedroom door (where ours are), can you put it in the closet? Then you can shut the door and not have the stupid light. Or there's always electrical tape to cover up the light. :->

I watch a lot of home renovation shows. Your kitchen would have everybody ecstatic at the end of those shows.

Your new space is just gorgeous -- the kitchen looks fabulous! The barstools and the new table/chairs are really lovely.

And most importantly, it sounds like Olive approves.

Congratulations!
