Gwyn and Jo's excellent adventure
Feb. 24th, 2008 10:21 pmGosh, it's been a while since I posted! I've mostly been futzing around, working on setting things up for work, etc. Thanks to the sage advice of many people, I have managed to secure a domain and web site for no extra cost as a subdomain to my vids site. Yay! OTOH, the bad news is that Yahoo mail, which I've used for years as a work address outside of my regular job, wants a whole $15 for the privilege of forwarding your mail to your home inbox. Sigh. I just so much prefer my Mac Mail client.
I've been taking things a day at a time. Making connections, doing some of the basic work, etc. I set a goal of something each day to complete, even if it's silly. And I'm enjoying sleeping in. I think one of the things that appeals to me most about freelancing is simply that I am a night person, and getting up early for the past 20 years, increasingly early with each new job I took, has made me miserable. My internal clock has never worked well that way, no matter how hard I've tried to retrain it.
The eclipse last week was divine. Michael and I sat out on the deck and froze our asses off watching the whole thing, but the bummer was that we got some cloud cover right before totality and so didn't see the final stages. Of course the clouds went away right afterward. But we did see most of it, so that was fantastic. I am such an astronomy geek and I was in seventh heaven, checking out all the constellations, looking at the planets, my arms getting tired from holding binoculars.
Best part of the week though was yesterday, when I drove down to Centralia, over two hours away, to look at a cat that Jo was interested in at the Lewis County animal shelter. He was a lovely chocolate point Siamese, and unfortunately she couldn't take him home because they have to snip his boy parts off, and she's so anxious to get him. He was a total doll, I wanted to cry from seeing all the animals that needed homes. Out there in the country, there are so many abused animals, and I saw a couple dogs that had been treated terribly. It was also interesting because I kept opening the door for these women who were carrying in huge heavy loads of cleaning things, litter, bags of food, etc., and they had things like Lewis County Inmate or Inmate Lewis County Correctional on their t-shirts. At first I thought it was some kind of jokey thing, and then I realized that no, they were from the women's facility, and there was a sign about something warning someone about what the inmates did or didn't have access to.
Then we drove through town and found a cool place to take pictures of, and then went to eat at the Dairy Queen (yum!) before driving home. Since we were with the kitty for a long time, and he was enjoying his lovin' time with Jo, I got home fairly late, but still had time to finish capturing for a vid that I'd like to send to Pacificon.
And tonight I had Oscar party fun. Everyone was passing Blues around like he was a pillow or a toy, which he was sort of acting like. Eliade gave him chicken, so he loved her most of all. I think he's quite disappointed to be stuck here with me, who doesn't give him chicken. It was fun seeing how well socialized he was, though. I think I'll keep him. Olive still hates him, and he has just decimated my furniture (the bar stools in particular, because he keeps missing his jumps and then grabbing desperately as he falls. it makes me cry), but I still kinda like the little dude.
The other highlight of the week was having
sdwolfpup over for lunch. It was just so wonderful to have someone to talk Charlie Jade to. I feel so alone sometimes in the fandom, and I want to talk and talk about it. I keep thinking I should do a pimping post, but I can't imagine anyone caring. I don't know.
Another thing I'm on the fence about. Calls for volunteers for the Vividcon auction went out, and I keep toying with the idea, but every year I go through the same thing: I don't think I want to be the person who gets the $50 bid when everyone else goes for $500, and I'm pretty sure that would be the case. I'm not a BNV, I have weird fandoms that aren't exactly in demand, I don't know how to do super cool effects and edgy stuff... so I feel like I would be setting myself up for humiliation. But I also think it would be interesting to see if I could do something other people wanted. In the same way doing Challenge vids was new for me, and tested me out in some ways, auctioning might test out a part of my vidding self I haven't yet. But the idea of being the also-ran is just... it's really daunting and I know that's what would happen. I get enough humiliation on a daily basis, I don't need more! I have until Thur to decide, I guess.

Date: 2008-02-25 08:18 am (UTC)I feel like I'm stating the obvious, here, but I will anyway: you seem to be assuming that anyone who bid on you wouldn't be familiar with your vids or vidding style, when in reality they would, and that would be WHY they're bidding.
If the bottom line is that it would be embarrassing if your services went for the least amount of money, that's understandable, but it's a chance every vidder takes, and you just have to figure out whether it's worth it to you.
