EEEeee!! MI:5/Spooks series 5

gwynMan, I waited and waited for A&E to show series 5 of MI:5/Spooks, and they never did. I was on pins and needles after the end of S4, and it was so frustrating waiting for it to show up. The other day, the show popped up on my Netflix things "you might enjoy" screen and I had totally forgotten they were going to release the dvds here without it showing on TV.
So of course Adam survived, though I wish we'd seen more of the recovery and such, just because it had to be tough for him, having lost his wife so recently and I wanted to see what that would do to him in regards to his son. But those first two eps were the tensest things they've done, even more than a couple of those episodes last series.
I adore Ruth. And I loved that Juliet told Harry at the end of the second ep that Ruth was in love with him and to not waste the chance. She has definitely come a long way as a character -- from hateful to pretty decent, now that she's on Harry and Adam and Ruth's side. I loved seeing the other Glenister brother, gah, I can never remember his first name, the one from Hustle, as the home secretary. And then we got John Castle with white hair! And to top it off, the freaky-lloking actor who played older Octavian from Rome, playing a more modern yet still freaky looking guy.
Jo was great -- she acted with calm and strength every time she was in danger, and I am so glad that Adam recruited her. She makes an excellent addition to the team, precisely because she doesn't look like someone who would have presence of mind and skills to get out of dangerous situations. Zaf was excellent at kicking ass. I just loved it when he went after that bad guy with the baseball bat -- how awesome was it that he carried a baseball bat?
And I have quite fallen in love with Adam, which surprises me a lot. I didn't think anyone could fill the shoes of the World's Worst Spy, Tom, and steal my heart that belonged to him, but Adam really has. He's damaged, but he doesn't let that bring him down, and he obviously does love his work.
The plot was riveting -- I have always been a bit of an espionage buff, and they did an excellent job of examining exactly how a coup d'etat could happen in a reasonably democratic country, how isolating the PM from other voices, detaining people who could potentially be your enemies, having control of the media in consolidated hands, finding a few key voices in the legislative bodies and funding from outside sources with a vested interest in who's in the seats of power, could all come together to subtly manipulate a public who fears threats from without and wants to believe that such a shift would prevent terrorism. And of course our heroes are there to save the day, but not without losing a lot in the process.
Hardest of all, of course, was losing Colin. That was pretty damn hard. I loved Colin and it was utterly tragic, the way he died. I hated the deus ex machina of his comms going out right before he told them about the planes, but of course we had to have that to up the dramatic stakes of his murder. He was so sweet and funny, and I am really going to miss his presence on the show.
Looking forward to the rest of the discs, though I don't know what I'm going to do about series 6!!
If anyone was interested in seeing with Burn Notice, which ran last summer on USA, they are running the whole first season starting on Thursday, and the second season starts July 10. It's really an adorable show, fun and light and full of great performances.
